Ian 6
I have had two chicks (a Gingernut and Pepperpot) for about six weeks and I noticed yesterday that one had started to peck a few feathers off the other. This morning she decided to peck off all the feathers of both legs!. The chic doing this has matured quicker and is laying. They have plenty of food, grit, greens etc. So I have taken action and separated them and put the 'pecker' in the greenhouse which fortunately I had just emptied of plants. I thought I would then re-introduce them next week end. Does this seem to be the right course of action?
staceychristie
Try to keep the two at least in sight of each other. Give them separate feed and water. Are they eating normally? If they start to peck at the feathers, then you could try and use antipeck spray, however, if it's got really bad, there is a chance that blood might be drawn, and hens LOVE the sight of red - it's interesting and they can't help themselves. I'd use Gentian Violet (WARNING - WEAR GLOVES!!! It gets everywhere, and you'll look like youve robbed a securicor van). Good luck Stacey XX
Ian 6
Thanks Stacey, They both seem to be eating ok, but a small bit of red did seem to be there. I have ordered some anti peck spray and I also read that it might also be a protein deficiency so i will get some mealworms today. The only thing is that they are not in sight of each other. quickcluck
Can you put them together of a night time???? Then supervise them together in the day? A bumper bit may also be of help to prevent the pecking...
