Watery and bubbly eye...

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

One of my girls seems to have developed a watery eye over night. It looks bubbly but is clear and does not look like pus! Sorry to be graphic but there doesn't look like any other injury around the eye although it does look a little swollen and I'm worried it is impairing her vision.

Does anyone know what this could be and best possible ways to treat it?

Thank you

I would recommend a trip to the vets as soon as you can JB.

We've had 2 eye problems here in different hens and both required veterinary treatment and antibiotics from the vet. One hen lost her sight in one eye due to complications - eyes can be tricky so they do need looking at by a professional.

If you can, have a look to see if there's anything in her eye that may have irritated it.

In case it's the beginnings of an infection, try putting a couple of cloves of garlic in their drinking water. And if you have dried oregano in the house, sprinkle a little of that on their food too.

Fingers crossed.

Just got back from the vets... all went well! :D

I had visions of poor old Ginger flapping and pooing all over the surgery but she was fine, even when the vet was cleaning all around her eye!

By the time we were at the vets there was no signs of the bubbly wateryness from earlier but her eye was still inflamed underneath and looked sore. She has been prescribed antibiotic eyedrops to clear up any infections and to take any swelling down. Hopefully it will clear it up... The vet made easy work of administering the eye drops, I somehow feel I won't be so lucky!

Thanks for all your advise guys

JB
