ClaudetteDay
Someone sent a reply to my other post regarding what to put in the nesting box. They said straw is a big no no. Any suggestions? Many thanks
chelsea
I use a horsey type bedding called Aubiose which comes in big bales from equine/farm shops. Similar stuff is called Hemcore or Easybed. I also use this in my run as it seems to coat the poos. Some people use shredded paper in the nestbox aswell.
Redwing
Aubiose is great stuff, you could also use shredded paper or wood shavings too
ClaudetteDay
Thank you for replying! I'll see where my nearest stocker of Aubiose is, or even buy some off the internet thanks again!
Ain't Nobody Here
Horse bedding is great (whichever type you can get hold of!). It absorbs the poos and composts well too . Keep it dry if you have it in your run though as it's very absorbant. Plastic shower curtains or corrugated plastic sheets are ideal for eglu runs. Raina
I used to use Aubiose for my tortoise's Haven't use it for my chooks yet,i use newspaper for the nesting box (we get it free) Here Sells & delivers Aubiose i think you can get a 20kg bale for just over £21 including P&P http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk We get everything from there, they normally do next day delivery too
laurmurf
mostin and i have been using rape based horse-bedding: Rapasorb is one of the makes. It's more easily available around here, and a bit cheaper. I tried wood shavings, and they were great in the nest box before anyone decided to sleep in there, but aren't as absorbent and they don't compost as well. I also tried Easibed, a mix of shavings and wood and it's scented: it was fine in the run but i didn't like it in the nest box: not absorbent enough and too 'twiggy'. I tried paper too, but found I had to change the nest box way too often for a lazy chook-mummy like me!
debbier
I seem to recall straw being suggested when I was first using it in my nesting box, but that hay was not to be used. I don't use straw now, as I find aubiose better (mine poo too much in it !!).
docsquid
I use Hemcore as we have a stockist very near who is very friendly and it only costs about £8 or £9 a bale. I put it in the nest box, line the poo trays with it and the base of the run as well. Excellent absorbency means picking the poo is easy, and it keeps everything nice and dry. Smells beautiful thanks to citronella scent. I also dust it with Diatom to keep the mites and lice at bay.

ClaudetteDay
I also looked on the battery hens welfare trust website, and they suggest straw with a bit of sawdust? I've also seen plenty of youtube videos regarding eglus and i've noticed many people using straw as well. But i think i'll stick to shredded newspapers for just now (at least i can buy them from our local supermarket!) thanks everyone
WarrensWorld
We can't get Aubiose or Hemcore, so we use Allbed soft equine bedding. The chooks seem to like it.
