iandjsmum
Hi Everyone I am interested in getting some sussex bantams as I have heard they are friendly and good layers. Is this true, please? Also is a sussex bantam a 'light sussex' or is that something else?! I am a bit confused. Also does anyone know any breed of bantam that lays well and lays relatively big eggs? Thanks
Saronne
Hello and welcome to the forum! I've got a couple of Buff Sussex bantams (there are 'Light' Sussex bantams, plus 'Silver' and another one, too.) mine are real characters and they sometimes boss the big girls around. They came into lay late in the autumn and were each giving me a small cream coloured egg per day - but seemed to have stopped now - probably due to the lack of daylight. I expect they'll start up once the days start getting longer again. I think if you stick with the 'utility' bantams, e.g. Rhode Island Red, Sussex, Marans, you'll get a steadier supply of eggs than some of the fancier bantam breeds - though someone with more bantie experience might want to correct me on that! Jools
Spot on Saronne First choose a utility breed, like Sussex, then find a utility strain if it's eggs you're after. I had just the one Silver Sussex bantam and she is absolutely fabulous. She's a regular layer of a good size egg and goes broody for me when I'm desperate to hatch, so I now have another two Silver Sussex bantie pullets and a cockerel too. Plus a Light Sussex bantam who I've rehomed from a friend. They are a great breed of bantam to have. Busy little things, good layers, laid back, good broodies and great to look at.
