Emily and Nick
Hi, I'm pregnant and own chickens. Is there any advice I should be following when it comes to handing/cleaning/generally looking after my chickens? Obviously I wash my hands after any handling or cleaning out, but should I be avoiding it altogether and getting someone else to do it whilst I'm pregnant? Is there a worry around toxoplasmosis? Any advice appreciated. thanks Emily

emchook
If it were me I would get some help . Better to be safe than sorry [ although I was a nightmare worrier when pregnant ] I made my doctor give me a blood test for toxoplasmosis as I have been around cats and horses all through my teenage years [ a long time ago now ]
Carol U
With normal hygiene you'll be fine with chickens. Enjoy!
welshnik
REALLY? I was told by my GP not to muck them out or handle them and my OH now collects the eggs and does all the chicken maintenance...............

Chook n Boo Mum
As with all things common sense & hygiene are key......................do what you can and ask for help if you can't.......and don't forget to wash your hands a million times everyday & apply moisturiser after every wash so you still have some skin left by the time the baby arrives .....or invest in some heavy duty rubber gloves Good luck with the Babe, when are you due.....nosy Omlet Auntie again Sha x
Looney
I agree with the others that good hygiene is the main thing, and not to do anything too strenuous like lifting the eglu if you can persuade someone else to do it! I wish I had requested OH did more when I was pregnant although he was suffering from a bad back at the time, typical!
Emily and Nick
Thanks for advice everyone. My mum is a GP and I've asked her now and she says she doesn't know of any risk with chickens. Cats are more of a risk, she said, and lots of people have cats and have babies. So I think I'll stick to the super hygienic way forward. Baby due in June. Emily x
