sick hen

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I'm new to the forum {and delighted i am to find it too!}and would love your advice on a sick maran that we have here.We are quite new to sick chickens and just browsing through your topics about sick hens it now seems likely that she has worms but do please confirm this. For the last two weeks we have had her in the house. She is very weak and less than a kilo in weight. She is very listless and puffed up.She has no appetite but does drink when she is able. She is fed and watered by syringe daily. Her poo is bright watery yellow with bright green semi solid fragments. We have given her a range of different things from antibiotics to rehydration salts to fortifying foods like complan and all to no avail.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

This link is quite good to see what is normal and what isn't.

You haven't mentioned what you have used to worm her........would recommend flubenvet.

Also would suggest trying to feed her some weetabix mixed with yougurt and some honey.....or some apples stewed so mushy with some honey.

I would recommend getting her to the vets tho as she sounds in a bad way.

Hope shes better soon poor thing.

Merry Christmas.

I would get some Flubenvet down her if you havent already

No rehydration salts though, salty things are bad for chickens and this will make her work overtime trying to expel them

Wheetabix and warm water is good for sick hens also try to get your hands on some Poultry Nutri Drops from Nettex - they are excellent

Pigeon food which is high in energy may help too

All the best

I'm inclined to suggest a trip to the vet.

Has she already been seen, as you mention antibiotics?

The symptoms you describe do suggest worms, but it could be any one of a number of things, and if you have given antibiotics which weren't prescribed for her, they may well have been ineffectual.

If you do decide to worm her, I too would recommend Flubenvet.

ready brek is very good it is pure oats, no salt!

have you sent a sample off to retfords, for anaysis?

She sounds very poorly and I would really agree with evryone she needs to see a vet.

Also did you give her antibiotics or did you put them in the wate5, as if the later she may well have not taken nearly enough medicine.

good luck

hello everyone

Thanks so much for all your helpful comments but it was within a few short hours of having posted that mail that she died.It was quite extraordinary how long the poor thing lasted under her state.we didn't get a chance to take her to the vet as she died during the holidays but will certainly do so if there is a next time as well as apply all your other valuable advice. Thanks again, its really appreciated.
