Egluntyne
Here is a useful resource for those who want to crochet their squares. **Click** I got into a right old tangle last night as I couldn't fathom out a pattern I had downloaded. Then the penny dropped. English and American crochet terms are different! Don't be caught out like I was. Easy enough to fettle once you have worked it out. jenuk99
Hi This is my first time on the crafty forum and I was looking for info about knitting. I have been given a pattern to knit a cardy for a new baby and haven't knitted before. I think this would be a good way to practise before tackling the cardy. I have lots of wool and needles but how do I find out if the wool is acrylic or wool? Jen x Edited to add have just answered my question tried some bits near a lit match and they all melted so I have acrylic wool. Off to have a go. Jen x It appears that most of the odd and ends that I am using are acrylic. I almost bought some wool wool the other day but wool makes me itch and I don't want a child driven crazy by an itchy blanket
Mrs Webmuppet
I've nearly finished my 12th square! The question is should I sew them together and call it a baby blanket or just leave them as squares? or sew them together and send the small blanket to Chucky Mama to add to the Omleteers blanket? oh decisions, decisions!
freddie
dont sew together, as the charity then has to pay duty on them, i think. read it somewhere on the KAS website...., maybe??? please double check, as i could be totally wrong! Mrs Webmuppet
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Freddie, you are right they do get charged duty for a whole blanket. I shall just leave them as a nice pile of squares. LMW wants to try to knit a square too.......knowing how many mistakes she makes and how slowly she knits it might be Christmas before she finishes ( plus the knitting fairy has to come along in the evening and fix all the mistakes....) Chucky Mama
Yes you are right, they have to pay duty on a blanket but not on squares. I think that is it just a cheap to post 3 as to post 1 so it may be worth posting in batches. Rough idea of postage is 100g - £1.68, 200g - £2.94, 300g - £4.11 and of course there are prices in between but that gives you an idea. The price increases per 20g. jenuk99
Well I am not impressed with my first attempt I cast on and measured and it was 8 inches so I knitted 3 rows and now its 12 inches, I haven't added any stiches but dont know what is going wrong any suggestions? Egluntyne
Try smaller needles. I always have to do this as I seem to be a slack knitter and crotcheteer.
Plum
Done one, it's exactly 8" Had to undo it twice though to get stitches and needles right

It worked for mine anyway.
jenuk99
Thats a good idea am using 4mm needles so will give that a try. Thanks knew I would get support on here Jen xx

craftyhunnypie
My W.I group now have a craft club on Tuesday evenings. This week we are doing crochet. I wonder if we can make squares & I can join them all together for a blanket? I've got about 7 squares done. Emma.x
Chucky Mama
The problem with sending a made up blanket is that the charity will get charged duty on it whereas they don't for the individual squares I would be lovely to get more people involved though.. Mrs Webmuppet
I'm up to 20 squares and have enough wool for a couple more. I have tried to get a friend who knits to do a few too. Once I run out of wool I shall post the squares. Surface post seems to be the cheapest option as they should qualify for small packet status, if I wrap them carefully and remove all the air out of the package. Mrs Webmuppet
I have done 25 squares and they are all parcelled up ready to go to the post office in the morning Hopefully the parcel should qualify for small packet status and only cost £3 odd to send (by surface post)
