gaufron
I thought hens stopped laying in winter but my three girls (all Black Rocks) are laying about 18 eggs a week. we live high up in Mid Wales with night temerature of minus 12 and day time "highs" of minus 4. I hope it dosn't do them any long term harm but i'm keping them well fed. They are free range and still love scratching around in the copse where they live and venturing out to have a look in the stables and getting their feet off the snow. Redwing
Some chickens are just little troupers and will carry on regardless even when they are moulting, its not necessarily good for them but hey they dont read rule books! Lucky you getting eggs
patsylabrador
Hi, my three little bantams started laying at the beginning of the cold weather before Christmas and have not stopped yet. I try to make sure they have greens strung up and corn on the cob most days, because I read that sensible chickens preserve their energy in the cold weather and thought I should supplement their pellets. Egluntyne
A lot depends on their age. If it their first winter the black rocks will carry on regardless.
Chucky Mama
My four are still producing 3 -4 a day. I feel a bit guilty though as they so hate this weather but are still giving us lovely fresh eggs every day. Maybe it's because they like sitting in the nice warm nesting area Edited January 10, 2010 by Guest

Space Chick
I'm still getting around 3-4 eggs a day They are getting loads of extra treats and corn, as I would rather they conserved their energy and used it to keep warm rather than to lay
JanTheDiver
I am still getting 3-4 eggs a day. My Black Rock just keeps on going, she only seems to take a day off a month
gaufron
Thanks for all the replies I'm glad that my girls are not so unusual. I must say they are very funny wadeing through 6 inch deep snow, they don't have to but seem determined to give it a go. Also I'm sorry my posts are so plain I havn't worked out how to put all the pictures on the bottom.
