juniperchicken
Hi just wanted to say hello! I was given a great present for Christmas - an Eglu, which is amazing as I've wanted one for two years. Now I've got it I can't wait to get some chickens - but want to make sure I make a good choice. Can anyone recommend where I can get some chickens near Bristol, and what breed would be good. I have a two year old so want friendly chickens , that are good layers Thanks
scrambledhead
Welcome! Have you thought about some ex bats? They're very rewarding and in my experience good layers.
juniperchicken
Hi Yes we did consider ex bats - I saw a poster at a local farm shop - but wasn't sure if I was very new to all this is, if we would be too inexperienced for looking after ex bats? scrambledhead
I have only ever had rescued chickens and with advice from BHWT, books and of course all the lovely chicken mad people on this forum have managed. I'm sure whatever you choose you'll love it

I don't know the name and I may not be 100% accurate on the exact location (as I now live 200 miles away). But there is a good place on the Nailsea to Clevedon road. It's near the big bend where there is a pub on the bend (I think it may be called The Star and I am prerry sure we are talking Tickenham) - sorry I cannot be clearer. I've driven past it a few times and it looks great!!! My brother lives in Clevedon and got his girls and stuff from there and confirms it's a really good place. One of mine is a Lohmans and she is as soft as putty and very friendly. My Black Rock can be a but hoity, toity but is coming very friendly now she's nearly laying. My Amber Links - never again - she is a bad tempered madam.

jess1merlin
Hi Have you had a look at www.anniehallspoultry.co.uk it is near Bristol and she did seem to have a good selection of hybrids when we were looking last year. She was also very friendly and happy to discuss anything chicken related and did not put you under any pressure to buy anything if you just wanted to have a look round. tooties
Welcome!! I've got/had ex-bats, amber star, miss pepperpot and a skyline. Out of all of these, I would recommend the amber star - she is beautiful and so good natured - whatever you are doing, shes right there in the middle of it trying to help. Easiest to catch and handle and a good layer, although mine has quite small eggs. She talks to me too! I have heard it said that the amber star has the softest feathers
