chuckmum6
Just got home and went to check on the chooks, only to find that the poor girls had been shut in by accident all day! My son(10) loves collecting the eggs and he is usually very reliable at closing the cube door for bed. We get leave for school at 7.20am in the dark, so I let the girls out at 7am, although they don't come out. We get back at around 6pm again dark! Last night he appeared with the egg, so this morning I opened the door, so I thought to let them out, but in fact as my son hadn't closed, it I actually shut them in! They have had no food and water all day! Although we have had a really huge green egg more like a goose egg, bless my Legbar Tikka! I have just been out with food, water and torches, and have watched them all eat and importantly drink in their cube, so they should be fine I hope? I have explained the importance of being consistent with our duties to my boys and the need for the hens to have water and food. It will not happen again here, but in this dark days it is quite easy to do, so I shall take a torch. Maybe I should just leave the door open? I did, but it is so bitter I have taken to closing it since the cold spell - any thoughts re this? Edited January 12, 2010 by Guest
Patricia W
This is my private nightmare too! But it sounds as though they are OK. It'll make us all more careful so maybe you've helped us too! Tricia
Jac and Rory
A couple of days after our chooks arrived in Nov, OH bought me a head torch from B&Q for chicken duties in the dark. It was about £6 and has the option of a white or red light. I wasn't keen on it at first but now would't be without it - my fear is always that I won't spot that 1 black rock is not yet in the cube when I close it. It may be something the boys would find fun as well as help them with the evening routine?

Chook n Boo Mum
I got the children windup ones from Cotswold Outdoors https://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/webpoint/webpoint.cfm?bhcp=1&fuseaction=productdetail&SHOWMESSAGE=0&GOTOLOCATION=0&MENUSTATE=N&id_product=32735&originalReferrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cotswoldoutdoor.com%2Findex.cfm%2Ffuseaction%2Fproductdetail%2Fid_product%2F32735#app=7491&2919-idGroup2=-1&2919-group1=&2919-counter=1&2919-tag=false&2919-selectedMenuVsIndex=0&2919-selectedMenuAccIndex=0&2919-selectedMenuLstIndex=-1&2919-selectedMenuLstIndex2=-1&2919-selectedIndex=5&2919-selectedMenuLstIndex3=-1&2919-idGroup1=-1&2919-group2=&2919-idBrand=-1 They were buy one get one half price before Christmas, so weren't much more than the B&Q ones & the torch can be used as a little handheld jobby too...........we've had several of the battery head torches & had the batteries leak in them, so I went for the wind-up version. My lot would never have let me forget if I shut them in all day , I've had days where I didn't get back in time to give them tea & have hoiked them out of their beds to eat in the porch, but only the very young or very small ones...the big girls have to make do with whatever pellets were on offer Sha x
docsquid
I thought I'd shut them in one night but in fact had opened the cube door as my brother-in-law had closed it when he walked past and had noticed the chooks were in bed. Poor little things must have been a bit cold all night! They weren't at risk as the run was closed, but I now check very thoroughly what I am doing with the door and where the chickens are before I close it! henriette
I think a head lamp is a must have! I go around with an enormous torch that I have to put on the ground if I need to use two hands for anything, which usually defeats the object as I loose the light! Will go in search of one as soon as we can get out of our drive. We have been blocked in by the ice for a week now, but it does look as if it is clearing quite quickly now.
