Hi all,

 

I know someone who's taking in Unwanted tortoises then rehoming them and is also breeding from them and selling the babies.

 

Just wondering if they can do this without a RSPCA licence (i think that's what it's called)

I don't know what an RSPCA licence is, but I'd think it would be ok to do to re-home them,

but wouldn't know about selling the hatchlings ...

 

They could just say they were taking them in as pets, but then to breed from them and make money does sound a bit off, to me anyway

A licence is required to sell the following species:-

 

Mediterranean Spur-thighed (or Greek) tortoise - Testudo graeca

Hermann's tortoise - Testudo hermanni

Marginated tortoise - Testudo marginata

A licence is not required to sell the Russian (or Horsfield's) tortoise - Testudo horsfieldi.

 

(A licence is needed for EACH tortoise and you should keep a copy if you buy one)

 

You do not need a licence if you are giving them away.

Yep, we were involved in homing some Spur-thighed tortoises for someone. They needed to find homes but they couldn't sell them so they had to be found suitable homes and then they were given to new owner rather than sold.

Hi Raina, any news on the person who is breeding tortoises? Just visited the posting and slightly concerned that everything is being done for the little creatures to live happily.

I e-mailed the RSPCA and they said it didn't sound right and they would look into it they said they would e-mail me back but haven't heard a thing yet,mind you i think they are quite busy as i emailed them on January 20th and they didn't get back to me till the 4th

 

Oh and i didn't mean license i mean Registration

I believe that you have to have a CITES certificate issued by DEFRA for any tortoise bred in this country to prove that it hasn't been imported illegally. The tortoise also has to be microchipped. Assume this is what the RSPCA are checking. Sorry - only just seen this post or I would have replied before

I wonder where you put the microchip on a tortoise?

I think it would go in their leg, they have quite a bit of loose skin so there shouldn't be a problem.

 

They have to be a certain size/age until they are done so Hughie wasn't when we bought him but I'd think he'll need one soon

Thanks for letting me know. It's well worth doing isn't it. I've just realised that one of my three cats isn't chipped so I'd better get that sorted out. He came to us as an abandoned neighbourhood cat and I got very busy getting him neutered and vaccinated but forgot about having him microchipped!
