lizzywood
I have two Welsummer 'hens' that are roughly 10 months old and in all honesty look like ladies.... However, I have recently noticed that one of them has the beginings of what look like spurs (little lumps about 15mm up from her feet - and getting growing). I'm not sure if this is an anomaly but could she be a man? The thing that confueses me is that they both cluck and sqweek (with no sign on a cock-a-doodle-doo) and their feathering is that of a typical female. When do Welsummer cocks start looking like males? I always thought you could tell fairly quickly. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks, Woody
Plum
Several members have posted that their hens have spurs.
lizzywood
OOh, I forgot to mention that we've also haven't had an egg yet?
tom123
Do they look the same your 2 hens? If so then they are both hens as Welsummers are quite easy to sex at a young age due to the difference in feathers between male and female. I have 2 hens who have spurs Tom P.S. I also have a Welsummer who is nearly 10 months and hasn't laid but will probably start when it gets warmer and the days get longer
Redwing
Welsummers are pretty easy to sex, I could tell mine was a boy when he hatched and was certain within two weeks

lizzywood
Hello and thank you all so much for your feedback, I really do appreciate it! I am now pretty confident that they are both ladies, phew!! Thanks again, Woody
Griffin
Runty Robin has a massive set of spurs, so much so that my daughter asked me yesterday if I was sure Robin is a girl. The blue eggs she lays suggests she most certainly is
