Silly mums

Recommended Posts

I know someone who goes basejumping and he told me about one lad who was poised to do his jump from the top of a cliff and got a phone call from his mum. She was understandably scared and wondered if he couldn't jump from somewhere a little lower!

I would laugh except that I am guilty of equally illogical thinking when it comes to my kid's safety.

That just reminded me of a vaguely related joke.

It's 1944, and a company of Gurkhas is being briefed by an Intelligence major on a hit and run mission they've to carry out.

".....You'll be flying in from the South, and should reach the destination at precisely 05:00 hours. In order to maintain the element of surprise, you'll be jumping from 1000 feet. Any questions?"

The Gurkha captain turned, explained this to those Gurkhas who were having difficulty with the English, then turned back to the major.

"I'm sorry, Sir, but they won't do it."

"What do you mean, 'won't do it'? I thought Gurkhas were supposed to be tough. What's the problem?"

The captain turned and talked with the Gurkhas again, then turned back to the major.

"Well, Sir, it' just that they're not happy with jumping at that height. They're brave enough, all right, but they'll only do it if they can jump at 50 feet."

"50 feet! That's impossible! The parachutes would never open in time."

"Oh, that's all right, then, Sir. If they're being given parachutes, then 1000 feet'll be fine."

Badoom, tsh
