chuckmum6
How long do you leave food in the grub for before throwing it away? My 6 girls don't seem that impressed by their layers pellets, they are eating it, but it seems to take about 3/4 days for the grub to need refilling - is this about right? Two out of my flock have been laying regularly, the others are POL and look like they will start laying any day now. They all seem happy and well, I'm just concerned that the food could go off/damp, any thoughts welcome!
veggiemad
i leave mine in - if i'm honest- and top it up as necessary. I only 1/2 fill it anyway though as otherwise too much gets knocked out on the floor! it is in a covered run though so not sure if this stops some of the damp. Christian
I leave mine until it needs refilling, then tip all the pellets to the left (they eat from the left first ) and fill up. You will find their appetites quadrule when they start laying
emchook
My three take forever to empty their grub .. I just leave the pellets in [as long as they are dry ] and every now and then empty it out as there can be a lot of "dust" at the bottom. Strangely enough, the oyster shell and grit has recently beeen disappearing really fast. No idea what they are up to !
chuckmum6
My girls have been getting through the grit quite a bit, I put it down them not getting much because the ground has been frozen for such a long while.
Rock N Rose
I try to mix it all up every time i top up, say 3-4 days at a time. also i bring it in at night to keep the damp, cold and pests off it. When too much dust builds up i dicth the lot and start again. Ian.
Egluntyne
You can tip the dusty residue into a bowl and add hot water to make a porridgy mush. Garnish it with a few raisins and they seem to quite like it.
Old Speckled Hen
When it's warm I get slugs the size of mini bananas on the food at night so I do bring it in. I just top up when there is only a small handful left. They do eat much more when they are laying and much less when they are free ranging a lot.
