Help - roundworms

Recommended Posts

My girls seem to have worms. About a week ago I noticed a poop in their tray that looked like it had small beansprouts in it. I've done some research and it appears it could be roundworm.

The chickens have had no drop in laying, and seem happy enough, and the combs still look a good colour.

I bought some verm x, and gave them the three day course which ended two days ago. Since then I've only had one other poo with a single 'beansprout' in it.

I've been reading on the forum about Flubenvet. To be honest I'm confused as to whether to get that as well, or should verm x do the same job.

My girls are in an eglu, with a large outdoor enclosure - we also let them out to free range around the trees, as they love pecking through the moss around the roots. The ground is a bit wet at the moment, but they do have wood chippings in the enclosure, which we dig and change each month. We clean their ppop tray at least every two days, and wash the eglu at least once a month with fairy liquid.

They feed omlet pellets from a feeder, and get boiled veg as treats.

Anyone had similar experiences, is verm x enough ? Not really sure what to do now, and a month til the next dose feels like a long time.

Thanks

Sounds like you have very well looked after birdies.

I use Flubenvet for one week on the 1st of every 4th month - that will flush their systems of all the nasties (sometimes another dosing might be required) - mine free range but there is plenty of wildlife here and pigeons are no exception (blooming great fat things) and they do like to share their poo with us - and undoubtedly worms in it too. On the 1st day of each month in between I dose with Verm-X. You can just Flubenvet them twice a year, but I do it more often because of the wildlife.

You can also add apple cider vinegar to the drinking water (just a little) which makes their tummies more unpleasant for lurking worms. It also is great for their feathers and health.

The Verm-X isn't enough on it's own to sort out worms - like the vinegar it just makes things a bit unpleasant.

Also a little Diatom added to food doesn't hurt them either.

But I've still got my L-plates on!

Personally I use Flubenvet

I dont hold Verm Ex in high regard although plenty of people do

Some people will say that the worms in the poo is Verm Ex doing its job, others will say its a sign of it NOT doing its jobs, discussions have been extensive on here in the past

Don't want to retread old ground but thought I would share my experience from a few weeks ago.

Found worms in poo which co-incided with Verm-x treatment - had been using Verm-x for last 10 months. After some consideration went for belt and braces and did Flubenvet too. Just finished the course of treatment and glad I did - loads of worms in poo :vom::vom:

Girls have perked up a lot since the Flubenvet. Planning to use again quite soon (as recommended on tub) and then use quarterly.

One thing I am squeamish about is worms - can deal with lice or other creepy crawlies but poor OH has been on poo duty since the worm incident! He is very glad they are all gone for the time being!
