Ok bad title, I know!

 

Miss shiny Bumhole - one of my new exbatts, her bum is worrying me now. Is it normal?

There is an awful lot of redness and a lump?! Obviously I don't know what they look like normally without their knicker feathers - but does it look right to you??

 

I tried getting a good pic today, but she wouldn't budge out of her warm straw nest.

 

Please excuse the quality of the pics and the state of the run (bloomin chooks have been kicking straw and woodshavings everywhere - roll on dry weather!!)

THere are pics of my new ex batts and my three old girls. Obviously the old girls are the ones with feathers!!

Can't see much from that photo, but the redness will be where her delicate skin is exposed; I use Johnson's tea tree cream (see below) for that. You can get it from most pet shops

 

 

It looks as if she might have a lump above her vent; is this what you are concerned about? I can't see enough to get an idea of what it might be. It all depends on how worried you are - most ex-batts arrive with some problem or other with their egg tackle, so if she's laying and otherwise happy, then I'd leave it (let's face it, you wouldn't have seen it if she had feathers). If you're really worried, then you can pop her to the vet for an exam.... s'up to you.

Oh bless them, isn't it sad the state ex-batts are when you first get them, it's awful to think what they have been through, it's such a cruel farming method. At least they'll have a lovely life now. Your run looks nice by the way.

 

I agree with Claret, if you are really concerned a quick trip to the vets will set your mind at rest if it is nothing. Good luck

Thanks for the tip. I have some of the tea tree cream somewhere - I will have a hunt for it later.

 

The wee things do look so scrawny and a little under the weather - but they're eating well, really well in fact, so I'm sure they'll soon beef up!

 

Miss shiny bunhole has some silvery/purple spikey bits coming through on her back, I'm hoping that these are new feathers. With any luck she'll get some to cover her bum soon too.

As Claret says, their skin is just not designed to see the elements so it gets very sore when it does , that tea tree cream is very good, and I am sure will feel very soothing on her poor little botty. The lump does look slightly odd, but they do look very weird shapes without their feathers, and it may just be the way she is built?

Awww bless your gorgeous girls - they look like they've had a rough time and bet they are so happy to be have a new life with you.

 

I had a tear in one eye cos they look so forlorn and a tear in my other eye from the laughter over miss shiny bumhole's name. Inspired.

 

I'm no expert on ex-batts I'm afraid but hope they get better soon, especially their bare bots.

poor little loves, one of them looks in a particulary sorry state.

 

One of my exbatts recently went to the vets as she wasn't quite right (perked up when there though) . She also had a red & sore bottom & said DO NOT use tea tea cream as it burns their sensitive skin. He suggested aloe vera gel (which I think isn't always recommended on here). I've used vaseline as a barrier, found it difficult to spread as she didn't like being touched.

 

My exbatts also brought lice with them, so it's probably a good idea to get at least one of them checked over.

I think Vaseline would be too drying.

 

I've used a light coating of Factor 30 suncream before now, as I felt that one of my hens was in danger of getting sunburnt in the nether regions.

Miss Shiny bumhole was dragged inside today and has had her bum smothered in Aloe Vera gel. She was well behaved and stood still so she did get a good covering.

 

It felt very warm to touch though - warmer then the rest of her - so I'll be keeping an eye on it and if no improvement, she'll go to see the vet.

Should she need to visit the vet, I will change her name. I would cringe if he said .."Miss shiny bumhole, you can come through now"

I have been called Hunny Bunny by the vet before now.. daughter nemed the rabbits

 

Chickens naturally have a higher temperature than us (105deg) so don't worry too much, but if she looks to be ailing, then take her to the vet.

That lump on her bum looks like her normal shape to me. I think it's just the end of her spine (coccyx) and where her tail feathers will grow from - btw those silvery/purple spikes are new feathers.

 

My Ruby was in a similar state when I got her, keep clicking through the pictures to see more of her, and how she looks now. Edit: it looks like I haven't uploaded the newer pictures.

How long ago were they taken and do they look like 'proper' chickens now?

I feel so sad when I look at mine in their sorry states. I'd love them to look all plump and shiny with fluffy knickers and smiley eyes. They day that they do, I'll flood the forum with pics!!!

I've just charged up the camera and still can't find the new pics - I swear I took some Ah well, will just have to take some more.

 

The pictures that are there were taken around September/October. October they decided to have a major moult and all eggs stopped. Now they have grown beautiful glossy brown feathers, some with cream mottling, their pale floppy combs have shrunk and everyone has a bright red face to show they're in lay.

 

The Photobucket pictures seem to have gone up in reverse order, so the very last ones are the first pics I took on the evening I got them. It is something special to see these poor shell-shocked creatures stumbling about and stretching out their wings..... I remember they didn't realise they could come out of the carriers when I opened the door, had to take the lids off
