ChrisEllis
Hi, I have 2 Indian Runner Females, they are roughly 8 months old and i was ondering when they are going to start laying for me, the man who sld them said that my blue one felt like she was about to soon, but bearing in mind they have been moved to a new location and been extremely stressed out would you say it will still be a few weeks? Chunky_Monkey
March time ahh man , isnt there a way you can get poultry to lay all year round? I remember reading in my practical poultry magazine...hmmm thanks though Hybrid hens lay all year round. If you get them at POL then they should start laying in a few weeks and will continue laying (unless moulting) for a good few years. You'll only have to wait a few weeks though! I've been waiting months for one of my hens to lay. I don't know anything about ducks, I'm just being a bit nosy round here.

tom123
Getting poultry to lay all year round, in my opinion, is cruel. They need a break from laying in the winter and they need the extra energy to keep warm and to get them through the moult. It shouldn't be that long unless it goes really cold again. Lesley
I agree that poultry deserve the break from laying and it's usually only for a short time anyway. Once ducks have stated laying then they are more likely to lay through the winter than hens, we've had a few eggs per week from ours, all through the cold weather. ChrisEllis
Im actually jealous!!! I think it might be a while yet til' mine lay, its been cold and different surroundings and stress although we was looking at Donald and he has fattened up, he was quite 'thin' in duck terms!! And didn;t eat much but now he is a good sturdy size and mating now. Im hoping everything will be like a chain reaction. cockrels crowing and hens crouching and chickens and ducks mating...next up eggs? lol
Guest
Sunlight daylight stimulates ovulation in poultry /ducks so as the days get longer they should come back into lay. But agree to do it artificially is unnatural. I use to get ie 2 or 3 eggs per week in the winter from ducks(7 in total) They do have a rest as the days are starting to get light they should start. The wild mallards have already started arguing..ready for spring! good luck indie
