legalities for selling eggs

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!!

I've found a 'sticky' from defra on this topic- but tbh got confused. I basically have 3 ex batts who lay well and am looking to get some more in april. I sell my eggs for £1.20 per 6 to freinds and family , and some mums at toddler club and all of a sudden i was struck with worry!!!

is this ok - they dont get sold in a shop or anything and i dont obviously havemore than 50 hens.

waiting for re-assurance....................thanks

As far as I am aware -

You cannot sell them as Organic, as your land isn't licensed (unless it is?)

You cannot claim that they are free range - as they need a minimum space to free range in.

I say 'Fresh eggs from Happy hens/garden hens'!

as yours are exbattery hens, they will have been vaccinated, so there shouldn't be any problems from that point of view.

There are no problems selling a few spare eggs to family and friends. I think I'm correct that the issue is with traceability but if you are selling eggs from your own hens to people you know then it's obvious exactly where they came from!

That's what I've heard, too. It's the main reason you cannot sell to a shop (to sell on) without registering first (not sure who you're supposed to register with, though!) :D
