Egg-laying behaviour

Recommended Posts

Recently my chooks have taken a great interest in each other when they are laying eggs. Whichever goes into the cube first to lay an egg has an audience, and a relay of the other two chooks attending her. This happens for each chicken.

I wonder if chickens are naturally nosey like this? They haven't done this until recently but now seem to be taking a great deal of interest in each other when they are laying eggs. Do any of you have nosey chickens?

Also, Blodwyn was in the cube for ages yesterday until I turfed her out. She had laid her egg, but had collected the other two together into a nice little nest and all three were warm, despite the fact that one of them had been laid some hours before (I was in and out yesterday and didn't get time to sort out the eggs until later in the day). So she'd clearly been sitting on all three. They normally lay their eggs in different places in the nest box, so I'm assuming Blodwyn had gathered the eggs together to sit on them.

I hope she isn't going broody - does this sound like pre-broody behaviour?

Today I was much sharper at removing the eggs as soon as they were laid and Blodwyn came out of the cube quite quickly and got on with the business of free-ranging. I'll try and be a bit sharper all this week to head off broodyness before it happens.

I was going to start a new post then saw yours and thought i would tag on lol.

My girls seem to watch each other as well but i think its more of a come on its my turn, i wanna lay an egg sorta thing. I can almost imagine them crossing their legs lol.

My new bluebelle chicken (Chalky) has been in and out of the coop all day since i had her a week ago, some of the other girls sometimes follow her in and literally turf her out, maybe she has to learn to wait her turn or are the other girls not happy about chalkys nosiness.

On another subject i collected the eggs at the normal time today but noticed chalky going in and out of the coop still, i had to nip out and when i returned i quickly checked in the coop and there was a humdinger of a large egg in there, not sure if it was chalkys or not, but i wondered if anyone knew what causes these extra large eggs?

If i get another one then i will be using the dyeing vent procedure to see if infact it is chalky.
