chickencam
Our lawn is pecked very short at the moment and won't hold out much longer unless we get some warm weather soon. We were wondering about laying fresh turf but wondered if it is usually treated with anything dodgy before cutting. Any info would be gratefully received. We only let the girls out for an hour or so per day so in the spring and autumn they keep the lawn down pretty well and we don't have to mow much in the summer. This winter with 7 chooks it has taken a hammering.
Jools
No problems with using lawn turf, in fact some people buy cheap offcuts specifically for their chickens. I would suggest that you protect it until it's had a chance to put some good roots down though, otherwise they'll just scratch it up and have great fun with the mess they make! I re-turfed my bantam's two runs four years ago after they'd completely trashed it. Because I had to put them in one of the runs, I chose the smaller and pegged some plastic mesh over it. They could keep it mown for me, but couldn't dig it up.
chickencam
I like the mesh idea, must remember that
sjp
avoid the turf sold as weed treated just incase they've used a commercial weed killer on it
chelsea
We returf every spring and buy our turf from a local specialist turf company. No effects here on our girls (I never thought to ask if it was treated to be honest )
