The Dogmother
We had tongs, and a 'boiler stick' for stirring the whites; often got threatened with the boiler stick if I was naughty
Helly Welly
I change our sheets once a fortnight in winter and once a week in summer when we're more sweaty OH is in charge of making the bed again but he complains every time It's the only thing he does apart from occasionally doing the diswasher so he has no right to moan really. Old Speckled Hen
When I was very little my mum did all the washing by hand. Then we got a boiler which she used to stir with a big wooden stick like a cauldron. On wash days particularly in the winter the whole kitchen was wet with steam. I don't know how she managed but everything was always so clean; such hard work! Then my dad and his mate bought a spin dryer which they both used to take up and down the road hiring it out for a few shillings. The boiler was later replaced by a second hand twin tub. It wasn't till years later when I had practically left school that my mum took delivery of a brand new automatic front loader We take it all so much for granted now. I never considered where all the water went but since moving into the country we have a septic tank and I have to be very careful what goes into that. Even washing greasy dishes is not a simple affair any more.

Life seemed so much simpler then Does anyone else still remember the lovely smell of gently boiling whites? *Mmmmm* I recreate it when I boil up some whites and facecloths in some Napisan. I don't have a boiler, so use a preserving pan!
Chicktastic
Every week for me, even though I never slepp properly in clean sheets!!
Happy chickens!
I love clean sheets, so every week for me and mine! My mum used to do the top sheet to bottom sheet thing, and only washed the duvet covers in the spring as they were 'protected' by the top sheet! I suppose it's greener to wash less. Can just see the fingers in the mangle Koojie, ouch! Can't wait for better weather to hang them outside, nothing like line dried, fresh sheets.
