cruciate ligament? Pic added!

Recommended Posts

My lovely Millie has had TPLO cruciate ligament repair surgery today. She normally jumps around and barks at everything she sees. I have to keep he still and calm for months now and have no idea how to!

Any ideas would be gratefully received. :anxious:

It's not an easy task, you may have to get a crate for her. Making sure that she gets that rest is pretty crucial.

Oh and don't forget to reduce her food as she wont be having any exercise and really doesn't need either the extra energy or weight :D

Opps editing again! You could put her food in a treat ball which will keep her entertained and will make it last longer.

Thanks Chucky Mama,

We did think we may have to crate her as long as we keep he close by she should be alright. Love the idea of a treat ball. Picking her up at lunch time, cant wait to see her .

We definitely need to watch her weight as she has already put some on since the injury and she is a thick set dog.

Will keep you posted how she does

We had this with Zeus and my heart goes out to you. Keeping a 45KG American Bulldog 'crated' in our porch was gruelling. As others have said he got lots of investigative toys and chews and we had sedatives from the vet, he got a half one if he started going pottyin his confined area. Good news is your dog will lead a normal life after the recovery period, Zeus runs around the farm all day and even comes out hacking with the horses. All the best.

I am gald Zeus had a full recovery, it sounds like avery similar situation, Millie is used to running round the farm and was chasing a fox when she did this! She loves her freedom and looks miserable in her crate :(

She has a massive dressing on her leg at the moment poor thing.

It is so easy to dogs to rupture their cruciate ligaments. It is what people do when skiing. One part of the leg goes one way and the other the opposite and hey presto ruptured ligaments. It is really important to get some weight off her if you can. She will be putting more pressure on her other leg for a while not and you don't want unnecessary weight adding to the pressure. If recovery goes well she should return to normal but weight loss will help reduce the chances of her damaging joints etc.

Yes I think one of the advantages of crating her is that she wont be able to steal food from our other dog and two cats! The vets info recommended a 25% decrease in food to make up for the lack of exercise. I think I will get her the light version of her biscuits as well.

Jess had her cruciate done & we were told that her other one would probably need to be done too................. :shh: we are about 3 years along the line & she's still ok, mind you we have banned all running up & down steep banks and jumping up to catch toys which were her main troublesome moments

We had her caged which she hated in the 6 weeks leading up to the summer holiday, so I suppose it could have been worse...the entire summer hols in a cage :wall: ..............she had her leg done just after Poppy had had both her luxating patellae operated on (dislocating kneecaps if it was in a human :vom: )and been spayed...we got good at reduced walks and cage rest

We'd expected Jess to be kept in for the night of the op (op'd on late that afternoon) and the following night for obs......we got called in the next morning to reclaim our poor little minx as she refused to eat or drink for anyone & they didn't know how to deal with a non-eating lab :lol:

Hope Millie feels better soon & good luck with the frustrated pooch expressions :anxious:
