My dog guards the chickens - normal?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone advise me please. I got an eglu and two chickens a week ago. Since then my yorkie has spent hours every day sitting with her back to the eglu door right up against it and looking back at the house rather like she is guarding the chickens. Has anyone else had this and will it get better over time? Thanks :?

Suzi my yorkie used to do this and think she was actually a chicken and eat their treat with them and generally mull around with them. We have segregated them off now (well we have in theory, the little blighter scuttles under the net in with them and two of them have learnt how to do the same with her) and it does help and she used to also eat their poop. :vom::vom:

My poor chocolate lab is terrified of our hens, its only started since we put up electric fencing to allow them to free range, I think he must have touched his tail on the fence and he thought it was the hens attacking him, so now when they're out he hates going outside and when he comes back from his walk he sits round the corner on the path and almost has to be dragged past them to get him back indoors.

Our miniature Dachshund loves bumbling around with our chooks...but I'm not sure she is guarding them...she just loves eating their poo and as many of their treats as she can stuff in her face before I see what she is up to! At the weekend she had a fabulous trophy in her bed...the stalk from a cabbage and an old and very bare corn cob that had long since been pecked clean

My Border Collie herds them and guards them she even fetches them back to the run if you ask her :):)

My Springer however is completely nuts he runs around with them eats their corn and pellets and has decide that the warren is his personal pet he chases her round knocks her over sticks his nose in her fluffy knickers and constantly wants to play with her. He hasn't done her any damage and she doesn't run away from him in fact when he goes out she runs to him. I was worried when we got her a few weeks ago cos he seemd to be knocking her over all the time but that's calmed down now,I don't know if it's her colour as he doesn' seem to bother any of the other chooks at all.
