Upgrading chicken housing - any advice?

Recommended Posts

Hi

We have an eglu and run, which houses 3 hybrid girls. Unfortunately they only get to free-range on weekends when I'm around, having had a couple of bad incidents involving foxes and I'm beginning to think the run isn't enough space for them really.

I'm looking into getting a new house and larger run for them and wondering where to get one (we live in Manchester but happy to get one online and have it delivered)? Maybe a wooden one this time. I don't think there is enough room down the bottom of our garden for a WIR and don't want to spend a fortune.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Emily

I was in the same position as you but decided a WIR was the way to go. My garden is quite small so I got a fairly small one (you can see it in my signature link).

Tony at Aviaries4u has built loads of the forum members' WIRs and will give you a quote for various options of your choice. His runs are very good value for money.

The good thing about a WIR is that, with the height, you have the option to add perches and higher levels.

Seems a shame to ditch the eglu as you already have it. Could you sell the run and put the proceeds towards a WIR?

Have you got space to section an area off with an electric fence? If so it would be cheaper than replacing the house and run. I'm also thinking a small walk in run wouldn't really take up that much more actual floor space than the eglu / run. I do agree it's not a cheap option though.

Is your eglu run the standard length, or does it have the extention?
