Hi

There seems to be a problem with one of our chooks. She seems to be walking funny, well i mean she seems to have difficulty walking, she sorta limps very badly. Also it seems like she is off balance like she will stumble and her wing will strech out (this is all on one side). When i went out there in the morn she was fine. She is fine in herself (eating).

Do any of you know what the problem is?

We are taking her to the vets later

Thanks

Matt

Well we took her to the vets last night and she examined her fully, tried to make her walk but she wasnt moving at all and she tried to pinch her legs to she is she could feel pain, but she didnt flinch at all which made her suspect that she could have some sort of nerve problem in her legs or that it could be some harmful virus, but she wasnt too sure. She gave us some options; either put her down, put her down and do a post mortum (however its spelt), take her to a chicken specialist or she could phone a chicken specialist up in the morn and she what she says. She said that the outlook looked bleak. So we decided for the vet to phone the specialist up in the morn and see what she said.

I could have almost been 100% sure that she would have to be put down, however, in the morn when we opened the cube up, she came flying out and ran for the food. I was soo happy to she her walking again. We phoned the vet up to tell her, but as she was busy she said she would phone back, but you guessed it, she never did. But shes been fine all day and has now gone up to bed so hopefully that is the last of that :D

Anyone else heard of this nerve problem in the legs of chooks?

On a couple of occasions my Amber has gone all funny and unbalanced (similar to how you describe) but both times it lasted less than a minute and then she was back to normal. The first time it happened after she'd skidded over on some ice. As Patricia W says, I'd go for a different vet in the future.

She could have just sprained it or knocked it on something. My Pumpkin was limping last week and as me nor the vet could feel anything broken we gave her antibiotics and some painkillers and now she is fine. I agree with the others, your vet doesnt sound very chicken friendly, try and find another one who is.

Good luck and glad to hear your chook is better :D

Glad she is fine.

This is exactly what happened with our Dusty but it turned out to be Egg Binding and she sadly didn't make it. The stuck egg pushes on the nerves and can affect walking etc.

So so glad she is better x

PS sack your vet !!
