Pair Of Show Line Salmon faverolles

Recommended Posts

Depends on the breed as well I guess.

I know Favs aren't rare but I have seen females go for £30-40 each at auctions.

It is definetely the maximum I would pay unless they were amazing birds that had won prizes at say, the National or Federation!

You do need to find out the background behind the 'show quality'

I have seen some awful quality chooks get first prize in shows because there were only one or two entrants in the class

'Show quality' is a term that seems over-used at the moment in the poultry world

There are one or two top breeders of Faverolles that would demand about £50/60 a pair and the birds would be worth every penny, unless yours are from a top breeder they are on the expensive side

The parents being show quality does not mean that the offspring will be either - bear in mind that a breeder is most likely to keep their very good stock themselves too!

The quality of the bird and the amount of money that changes hands does not guarantee prizes either - there is a lot of work involved in keeping a chicken in showable condition - you also need space, a pair cannot live together unless they are going to moult before you show them as the cockerel will break feathers on the female, my breeding groups were not put together until my last show a couple of weeks back, they will be separated again at the end of summer so they can moult before the autumn show season - thats why there are less good quality shows in the summer

Favs also have feathered feet, those feathers need to be kept unbroken - a problem if you freerange your birds

Please do your homework before paying out for these

I agree with Tasha; the term 'show quality' can cover a lot of evils, and without seeing rosettes and a breeding record, I'd be suspicious.

Personally, I think that price is far too much.

Most of my banties and minis are 'show quality' in that they come from showing stock, but don't quite make the grade. Having said that (as Tasha has said) if I entered one or two of them in a small show, they'd probably get tickets.
