Cazx Posted April 5, 2010 Share Posted April 5, 2010 One of my girls in laying...I have no idea which one, but I am grateful My question is....why doesnt she lay in the morning? Is this 'normal' or do I have backward chickens? I find eggs, in the nest, at 3.30 in the afternoon. And why do they s"Ooops, word censored!"e all the straw out and lay straight into the nest? Should I change bedding? It always seems to be Hetty that goe sin and re-arranges the whole eglu after Ive spent ages cleaning and arranging it for them. McChook Posted April 5, 2010 Share Posted April 5, 2010 No such thing as daft questions When I first had my chickens, I had a lovely romantic notion about getting up in the morning and skipping down the garden with a basket over my arm to collect my eggs - but I don't think I've ever got up to a fresh egg in the 2 years I've had them! I usually collect eggs in the dark when I get home from work - my girls are strictly 9-5! Purplemaniacs Posted April 8, 2010 Share Posted April 8, 2010 In the middle of the summer when I have opened the eglu door to let the girls out, a couple of times I have found an egg in the nest box waiting for me but normally they lay later in the day, sometimes morning, sometimes afternoon, whenever it suits them . Its normall, there new to laying, just getting the hang of things, then they may change to laying in the morning, you never know! Haha, no you should not change bedding, they're fine, they will find a place to lay, just let them sort it out, they obviously are just making it how they like it. You have never heard such a racket - sounded like ad for "Doit all" - just a bit of shredded paper. All the paper was in the run.
