AmberSky
My brother and i have built a fence to the side of my garden to keep the girls in while i reseed the lawn. I think the bad weather and my increasing number of girls have paid its toll, so i was wondering if anyone had suggestions for lawn seed ie type, price and where to get it from. i have heard mixed reviews of canada green, and wondered if anyone had experience with it. i have penned the girls in to a 7 ft x 42 ft patch leaving me 100 square meter patch to grass, also how much seed would i need? And finally any tips for reseeding would be helpful.
Lewis
You can get poultry grass on ebay, but you have to buy 5kg at a time. Wilkinsons sell hard wearing grass too - its called something about Pets & Children
Stevie
lol! When i still lived at home years back,i reseeded my mums lawn with that 'Canada green' grass seed.It did everything it says on box (germinates in 7 days, grows under trees and grows quick) and unfortunately-it didnt stop growing! I still think i should have thrown the Flymo away and bought a herd of sheep cos they would have been better suited with this rapid growing grass!!! I dont recomend it to be honest cos its high maintenance. Basically-any type of budget grass seed from DIY shops/Wilkos/Tescos etc will contain a lot of perenial rye grass which is the hard wearing stuff. Surely if the canada green grows so well then surely it is ideal for chickens seeing at how destructive they are? Why is it so high maintenence? and would not the chickens keep it short? Stevie
If you ever decided to keep the chooks in another part of the garden-you will have the additional job of mowing your grass more frequently than normal.Dont get me wrong,i enjoy gardening and actually dont mind cutting the grass, but i wouldnt go out of my way to get Canada green again. Its also quite expensive when you work out the weight you get.If you can put up with the points i've listed above-then give it a go. Now the soil is warming up it wont take long to germinate, but just keep it watered.Rake the soil into a fine crumbly texture, sprinkle seed, rake again to mix it up and water. AmberSky
Thanks stevie, my garden has been a mud bath which is why i have had to pen the girls in, so i think all considered the canada green although initially expensive could be the way to go and if it gets too long i just let my girls out for a day or so to trim it for me! Thanks for the help.
Lewis
Sounds like you're sorted Don't let it get too long if the chickens are going to go on it though - can cause crop problems.

AmberSky
Thanks all for the advise, i have worked out i need approx 2kg canada green to cover my 100m square mud patch! Seems that argos have a deal on til end of july as well, buy 2x500g get one free, so i may buy 4 and get 2 free to save for patches i miss or to top up next year. i now have the job of clearing all the junk, wood chip and stones from the area while i save for the grass seed, the fence has just about wiped out my little bit of savings for now! i'll let u all know how i get on in a month or so time. Chucky Mama
I bought a box of seed from Poundland - before you ask, it was £1 It was to seed an area left bare by a trampoline. It did the trick and is as hardy as the rest of the lawn.

AmberSky
I was too impatient to wait til next month so i used my flexible friend lol, dug and raked half today(about 50 square meters worth) but got side tracked when i hit a slab under the soil, 3 hours later i had about 50 slabs and wall bricks, much have been a green house there years ago because there also was a fair amount of broken glass. So the OH is already planning where i can build a patio with the spare slabs lol. Purchased the grass seed, it is more expensive than most, and cost me about £30 for 5 500g packets from argos which is currently buy 2 get one free! If my back holds up tommorro i will atempt to finnish it off and hopefully get some seed down. This stuff better be good after all this work Just waiting for the painkillers to kick in.
