I've been to my doctors today for a tetanus jab and on the wall it said that last month 112 people failed to turn up for appointments! That makes me cross as well as there are probably lots of people like your daughter who couldn't get an appointment when they needed it.

Thats an appaling statistic. OUr GP practice has a no-appointment system in the morning, where you turn up and que outside until 9am. It's actually OK if you're ill enough to be off work anyway, but rubbish if you've a more routine thing. They do have appointments in the afternoon which generally you need to book a couple of weeks in advance - which is fine for routine stuff.

I realise that there is an appalling waste of GP time in missed appointments but in my mind you have to factor this into your appointment system policy rather than making the needy patient suffer for the irresponsible.

When I was working I stayed later when my list was full and went home early if I had DNAs. Everybody was seen more or less when they wanted.

I sent an email to my PCT asking if they could give me a list of surgeries that do not operate a booking system that prevents patients booking an appointment more than 48 hours ahead and information on changing GPs.

This is the reply that I got

Thank you for your enquiry and I am sorry to hear you have had

difficulty in getting a GP appointment. If you have not already done so

I would suggest you discuss with the Practice Manager who may be able to

help. It is difficult to change a GP if you are already registered with

a surgery as another surgery is not under obligation to take you on.

However, you could try other local surgeries in your catchment area and

ask if they would take you on and also how they arrange their access to

GP appointments. You will find details of your nearest surgeries on

http://www.nhs.uk Once you have entered your postcode and have surgery details,

you can click on surgery name and will find details of services offered

on a second page. Also a new surgery has recently opened at *********

Memorial Hospital named ********* Memorial Health Centre which is

taking on new patients at present and you may want to try there if this

is convenient for you. This new surgery has extended opening hours and

tel no is: ************. I would be interested to know which surgery

you are currently having difficulties with regarding appointments.

So one question answered after a fashion.

Anyway, thanks for all your best wishes. My daughter saw a doc at a practice local to her Drama school who assured her that her lump, although on the breast, was not in the breast tissue and therefore harmless. Quite why the doc in A and E the night before could not have reassured her similarly,rather than practicing her lack of bedside manner, is beyond me.

At my surgery here in Kendal you can make an appointment any time you want; 3 days 6 days 2 weeks. They will see you as a walk-in if, having been triaged by the practice nurse, you fit the urgent category and you don't have to tell everybody in the waiting room,via the receptionist,what is wrong with you. They are a wonderfully friendly and caring bunch

But if you persist in missing appointments you are taken out and shot. Not many are

we run this system too, and if you miss more than 3 appointments in a year you get a letter, if you do it again you are removed from the list. I've sat here today from 8.30 and 8 patients have not turned up or cancelled their asthma clinic appointments, still I've done a few chapters of my book . My Drs and staff are also a very caring bunch and will go out of their way for patients

I find it soooo frustrating when people don't turn up! As an OH nurse, I occasionally have the same happen. Because you are waiting for people you can't go and do something else and the day just drags! Luckily, as I work for private companies they quickly realise that paying me to do nothing all day is not good for the bottom line and employees are then told in no uncertain terms that they must either attend or cancel properly if they can't make it Just a pity the NHS can't 'encourage' people in the same way!

I wouldn't mind but you can book in advance at our doctors and they operate a walk in surgery 3 times a week so there is no excuse for somebody not to turn up really.

 

Anyway - the important news today is that your DD has been told not to worry about her lump - brilliant news. What a relief.

I am a practice Nurse for NHs and the number of no shows beggars belief. Thats the reason you often cant get an appt in an emergency. Selfish so and so's who are too lazy to let you know they wont be coming. I am glad daughter is ok and boo hiss to unsympathetic A&E Doctor - even if she wasnt in the right place a young woman with a breast lump should be treated with tact and sympathy.

Apologies for hijacking this thread, and maybe if someone knows the answer they could pm me, but should you just get lumps under the skin checked out? I'm asking as I have what I think is a mole come up in the last 3 weeks (I think) on the inside of my breast. Its same colour as my skin but it is raised slightly. You can't really feel it, but I can see it. I started with a small spot, and then the 'mole' formed above where the spot was. I'm not overly worried, just a worry niggling in the back of my mind. Apologies for the hijack again

I am no expert on lumps but a new lump should be checked - probably a lipoma - a small bit of fatty tissue ( and nothing to do with weight) generally can leave but anything mole like or on breast should be looked at by your GP - good luck and let us know what they say

I think it is always worthwhile getting any lump/mole checked if you are worried about it.

I will do. I'm sure it's nothing, as I have just been Googling moles and I can't find anything that looks like it, so I am sure it is nothing to worry about.
