Recommended Posts

you know the reusable big blue plastic bags at the til in Ikea? They're massive and 40p each?

these...

most purpose made planting bags are upwards of £1.50

so, I thought I'd buy 2 x 40p blue bags and try my sweetcorn in them.

has anyone used these as planting bags before and how did they work out for you?

Good idea :P

I think I would grow something a bit lower growing in them though, like courgette,Squash, even carrots!

Sweetcorn grow really high,so the bag may not be stable enough around the base to support them :?

Carrots would be great as they would get that uninterrupted run of compost with no stones 8)

I love growing stuff in unusual containers.

Hubby found some fab old wooden wine boxes last year - they were great for salad.

And also about a year ago our council changed from Recycling boxes to wheelies,so we had 4 big green plastic boxes, which the carrots did amazingly well in 8)

They even had drainage holes ready for planting

I planted an old white Belfast sink with salad yesterday & Hubby came home with another at lunchtime too, so i am putting the Spinach in that one 8)

I used the bags my chicken feed is delivered in (same sort of material as the blue Ikea bags I reckon) for planting last year - some veg; herbs; potatoes; strawberries - seemed to work fine - I just rolled them down till they were right length for what ever I was planting.

Thus inspired I have just ordered four new recycling boxes.

They are being delivered tomorrow and are free :D:D:D:D

I didn't tell the council they were for growing carrots in :wink::wink:

There was a roaring trade for them here, when the wheelies were introduced.

I heard a rumour that they were selling for £5 a piece via the local rag 8)

Saw some super displays of them used for both veggies & bedding in some peoples front gardens too
