Sooo much pooping

hi ive been lingering around this forum for a wee while checking out all the cubes and eglus and snazzy runs that you all have and have set my heart on getting 8 chickens and an orange cube but i need to work out exactly where i am going to put it in my garden.

 

my odd question is how far does the metal arm on the cube come out to shut and open the door?! i havent seen a cube yet and have a few measurements but not that one which is really important to me.

I am not at home at the moment so can`t measure but i reckon it comes out about a foot maybe a little more.

 

Someone will be along with the exact measurement in a moment I am sure!

 

Also...there is a "Sticky" at the top of this section which lists Omleteers who are happy for you to go and have a look at their cubes, eglus and set ups so maybe you could do that and take your tape measure along

thanks for the speedy reply - im very excited about it all but want to get it right and have a gap in the garden where i think it might fit but space a little tight and i want to make sure i can easily keep them safe at nite.

 

i'll have a look and see if there is anyone in my area on the list

remember you will need access to the other side of the cube too - the nest box is on the otherside to the door handle - the only flaw in the design in my opinion.

I've been out and measured the handle- 11 inches/ 28cm, I would think you would need about another 4 inches/10cm to get your hand around the handle to twist and turn it.

also when thinking about your location it's probably best mentioning that with 8 girls the cubes standard run would be too small, so you would need an extension added to it or infact if you had the room you could put as many extensions on as you liked.

it does fit - just - with an inch to spare after adding 4 inches hand room

 

only prob, like has been mentioned is being able to get at the other side. hopefully it'd only be a temporary measure to have it up the thin end. just until i get my WIR (ive picked up the lingo ha ha!) sorted!

 

while i am at home the hens will be free to roam the garden and will only be in the run if i am out or shut up for the nite in their beds - but any info for a chicken keeping virgin is all good

even for a small period of time that run is just not big enough IMO and could give you problems amongst the girls. Well worth investing a cube extention.. orrrrrrrrrrrr getting some of the girls now and when the WIR is there, finding some alternative sleeping quarters for them and use the cube run that comes with your cube butted up to the WIR inside as the newbies area for gradual intros.

 

Errrrrrrrm not looking at anyone in particular ...but YOU would do that Falkor :lol:

Can't help with the cube cos I don't have one, but if you're eventually going for a WIR I'd build that first and get a cube without a run
