Help sexing Light Sussex chicks

Recommended Posts

Hi, anyone out there good at sexing Light Sssex chicks?

They will be 6 weeks old tomorrow, and we're in the window of being able to tell them apart - except we're struggling a bit (some of those with tails have pronounced wattles andor combs, so we're getting conflicting signals).

Anyway, if you're experienced at this, I'd appreciate your opinion.

I could only get pics of three of them, so I'm postng those now and I'll post the others as soon as I can snap them.

First up is White". We're fairly confident that we know the sex of this one, but I would like your opinion:

Next is "No Ring". Again, I have my own idea on this one, but s/he kept posing in front of the camera:

Here's "Purple". Large tail, but biggish comb. I've included a number of pictures of this one. I did try to get a pic of the wattles as they are red and fairly big, but I failed:

Thanks in anticipation!

I'd guess the first (White) is a boy. He's got an upright stance and long, chunky, legs, with 'bloomers' at the top.

No Ring, looks more like a girl.

Purple, not sure, but would say girl as more compact, a bit crouched and looks 'fluffy'.

In my limited experience of light sussex I would say that

White boy

No ring girl

Purple boy

We successfully sexed our own LS chicks when they were 5 weeks old ( & had a good idea of which was which when they were 4 weeks old), so that I took 3 boys & 2 girls home with me & my friend kept the rest to live at his house.

There was one chook that he kept that we weren't sure of, even when it came to dispatching the boys at over 20 weeks old. We did dispatch him/her but weren't 100% that it was a boy :?

I can sex Sussex chicks at around 5-7 days old. The boys combs are bigger then, only very slightly but if you know what you're looking for it's easy.

I can't see their combs too well but just from their stance, legs and faces I'd say White is a boy, the others are girls.
