3 eggs from 1 chicken.....in 12 hours!!!

Recommended Posts

Is this possible?

When I got home last night Flo's back end looked rather large and she was having trouble walking. Not limping or anything but just labouring every step. She hadn't laid an egg up until then.

She took herself off to bed about 8, and when I went to tuck her and Gloria in, they were on the roosting bars having a chat.

I got up to let them out at half 5 and there was one egg on the roosting bars, where Flo was, and a broken egg in the poo tray.

Flo seemed much better and was free ranging at about half 6 this morning.

I went to see if they were OK, and found Flo on the nestbox, quite happily chirping away. I thought she was taking 5 minutes out to have a sit down as she had been denied a snuggle in the nest box, which I had just lined with new hay, and camomile and dandalion hay (yes, I know...spoilt).

Anyway she decided to move and there was another egg. Making 3 eggs in 12 hours...How is that possible???

As I left for work this morning Gloria was going up to lay her daily egg, so I know that the other 3 don't belong to her - quick question (after a very long story....), IS THIS POSSIBLE. :anxious:

I have read soo many chicken books and they all say it takes around 25 hours to lay an egg, so how can I get 3 in 12??

Would appreciate your words of wisdom.

Yes, it is possible. When A hen ovulates, she normally releases one egg and that travels through the system and is laid. Sometimes a shock, thunderstorm, dog barking etc can result in more than one egg being released, therefore more than one egg a day!

It is quite rare though!

I quite often get 3 eggs in the morning from 2 hens,Lady Lay normally Lay's 2 eggs in one day every 1 - 2 weeks

The first ever time she laid she had laid 2 eggs (found 1 egg in the nest box an hour later she had laid another)
