joanne38
Hello there I just came upon your website by accident! I live in Ireland. Completely by co-incidence I was listening to the radio and heard an item on keeping hens. I was looking into how feesable it would be to keep them in a smallish garden in a housing estate when I followed a link on these cute little coops called Eglu's and here I am!!!! If you have anything you could tell me please that could clue me in on whether this is doable or a disaster for the grass, I would appreciate it. Thanks Jo
chicken bark
Hi Joanne It is definitely doable and can also ruin your grass. Probably best posting questions in the Chickens section of the Forum as I think more people will look there. Go for it and you won't regret it. Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum, Joanne . I've made you a new topic all of your own in chickens . There are a few Omleteers in Ireland - hopefully they'll spot this . Re the grass, unless you have a huge expanse I don't think chickens and grass can survive together (unless they're only on it for a short time each day). Lots of people contain their chickens behind netting to keep precious plants, veg and grass safe. I have an eglu and a walk in run in a pretty small garden in a housing estate - you'll see it in my signature link. A small garden and neighbours are no barrier to having an eglu and chickens . rustynail
Hi Joanne I live in Ireland. I think an eglu would be perfect for a small garden in a housing estate. But I dont think your lawn will be pristine ever again. Mine was pretty rough to start with so I didnt care. I dont have an eglu, I keep my 4 chickens in a traditional 'Toblerone' shaped ark, which I move every day on to fresh grass, and I let them free range in the back yard when I am around to keep an eye on them. I like this forum because there is always a lot of good advice, and I can also see that everyone is as mad about their chickens as I am! I have only had the chickens for 2 weeks, and they are about 10-11 weeks old now,(and I think have doubled in size in 2 weeks!) - and already they have their own personalities and preferences. I spend hours outside with them in the evenings after work, and at weekends, they are endlessly fascinating and they like having me around! They will do anything for mealworms, Lucie even jumps up for them, and then follows me around pecking at my shoes and trouser legs. Even if they never laid an egg I would have them for the entertainment!
