Charlottechicken
Hoping for a bit of unbiased advice here. The house next door to me is now being rented out and we share a side tunnel entry. On Wednesday the occupier's parents had cable (Virgin Media) fitted, as a surprise I think, and there is a brown plastic box in the entry around 3 feet up on the house wall but right near the entry door. My mum comes round every day to see the hens and has complained that she has caught herself on this box each time as it is a foot from the door, I said she will have to get used to opening the door wide to walk through, and have had to stop her going round to the neighbour and 'having a word'. I wasn't notified that this was being done so was unable to ask them to fit the box higher, which would've been better as we use the entry a lot with wheelbarrows etc., and the box may get damaged where it is. I actually don't think I can stop them putting this box in the side entry, but mum is rather mad about it, as the gas supply to this property is already in there too. My utilities are not in the entry. Any ideas?
Cinnamon
I think you should go & have a nice friendly chat to them - take them some eggs if you can spare any,& say that you are worried that it will get damaged where it is. The people who put it there really should have sited it up & out if the way if the could Not your neighbours fault though, but if it does get damaged where it is,then at least you have told them from the off that its in your way
The Dogmother
As Sarah has said, have a gentle word and see if they can't get it moved. Check your deeds; I share and access alley with four other houses and it is 'shared land' so not owned by any of us, but it does stipulate that we must keep it in good repair and not obstruct it. Happy chickens!
Do you know the landlord and did they ask his permission - would be surprised if he/she had agreed, tennants can't just do as they please. If you have legal cover with your household insurance you could call them for free advice too. How very annoying and thoughtless some people can be! Patricia W
We had this with our cable. We asked/told them to move it - and they did - so worth speaking to your neighbours to ask them to do this. Tricia
Charlottechicken
Thanks for the replies, all very useful! I have emailed Virgin Media and asked them to re site the box at a minimum height of 2 metres as it will get damaged and cause personal injury if it stays where it is. I have pointed out to them it is in a shared right of way as well. Will let the neighbour know if I see her, but I'm a bit miffed they never asked or mentioned it before they did it, and they haven't even bothered to clear up the mess. I measured the box and it is 70cm off the floor and just 30cm from the lock (have taken a pic for evidence as well). I've had a quick scan through the deeds but can't see anything about keeping the passage clear just shared maintenance (that means me as owner never does anything ) I know who the landlord is as I have had many problems with him over the years. I won't mention it to him as it will be a nice (?) surprise for him when the tenancy ends!!
