Coming into lay

Recommended Posts

Two of my young ladies have laid their first eggs now. Corporal cluck laid a lovely double yolker last week and Henela laid a tiny wee egg (and made a terrible song and dance about it!) on Saturday. The eggs were laid almost a week apart.

Is it normal for chooks to take a while to get into the swing of laying, or have they just been eating too many greens whilst ranging and not enough layers pellets to be laying every day? I can't seem to find an answer to this.

It's normal - one of mine fluctuated between whopping double-yolkers that made my eyes water, and eggs so small that a bantam would have been ashamed to own them! Within a month or so of starting to lay, you should find they are popping out nice regular-sized eggs, so I wouldn't worry at this stage.

Oh, no - I'm not worried about the size, it's more that they've only laid one each! I'm curious as to whether with the first eggs, they're spaced further apart until they get used to laying, when it becomes an every day occurence.
