Mrs Peckham is ill - advice/help please!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, i'm a newbie to keeping chickens so am hoping someone can help me out here!

We have 3 brown Lohman layers that were sold as POL aged aprx 26 wks but I think they might have been older but thats no problem. They are fed on layers pellets & a couple of handfulls of mixed corn in the evenings with occasional treats of lettuce/cabbage leaves. Last night I noticed one of the girls had become lethargic and hunched. At first I thought she had a crop problem as she wouldn't eat her treat so picked her up and tried a bit of gentle crop massage but it felt empty & just full of water. She then promptly emptied her vent over me which seemed to be fluid with a bit of yellow in it. Following this I placed her on the ground and after about 5 mins she laid a normal egg but with what looked like some yolk which the other two ate.

This morning she was in the nest box & wouldn't come out, I brought het out & she was still lethargic & has a dirty bottom. Her vent appeared to be contracting continously, she had a drink & then went back in the coop. I couldn't feel anything egg shaped but wondered if she was egg bound even though she laid last night???!!!

Any thoughts of advice greatly received!

Hi all, quick update - Mrs Peckham hasn't laid for 2 days but is a bit brighter, shs came out of the coop on her own today & has been pecking around & has eaten/drunk a little but still not as active as she was. I gave her a dose of zolcal this morning as recommended so fingers crossed!!

Also got some Flubenvet just in case it's a worm problem.
