skye
Hi all Settling in to our new home in Kent this week. Having spotted a large fox in the adjacent field at 6.30pm today, I decided it was time I set up the electric netting I bought for the purpose in our garden around the girls' free-ranging area. However in the first half hour of it being connected, they only succeeded in consistently shocking themselves on it... jumping in the air shrieking, then preening for five minutes before going and doing it again... Most distressing to watch, poor little souls. Does anybody know how long it takes hens to learn to keep away from the netting? Thanks in advance. skye x
tom123
Mine kept doing it for about a week until they learned, some still stick their heads through
chicken bark
They will learn eventually. Don't worry - their feathers insulate them quite well.
skye
Thank you very much for the reassurance Tom and Chicken Bark. Day Three and they seem to be shrieking less often I must say - it allows you to relax knowing they're safe while you do things around the house. Once they stop electrocuting themselves it will be perfect! skye x
Forge Cottage
The shock is not that bad (just think of it as a big surprise) and they learn to respect the net very quickly. Ours still hurry through the gap when we let them out! It is just a bit unfortunate if they all happen to be forming a chain at the time!
