jellykelly
Whats going on? I read so much about chirping eggs yet mine are quiet. I've had my ear to the nest box and not a peep. I have, on a brighter note, managed to organise some cream legbar chicks for friday should nothing happen over the next few days. Thats another thing I'll need advice on - how would I sneak the chicks under broody without her noticing?
Redwing
Dont panic, I hatch most of my eggs in incubators and dont hear any cheeping You'll know when things are happening when the broody gets restless, for now just leave her be The eggs under one of my broodies hatched over days 21. 22 and 23 If you end up sneaking chicks in then do it at night removing one egg and replacing it with a chick, wait for the mum to settle then do it again and so on
Chook n Boo Mum
Jelly, I can understand and feel your pain don't give up yet though, she may just be "overdue"............. Even if you can't hear the eggs cheep from under mum, you should hear them if you hold them to your ear, also live eggs should bob in a bowl of warm water..........Holly's did neither & turned out to be 4 infertiles & 2DiS Good luck Sha x

jellykelly
I can see the benefits of having an incubator. You're able to see the hatch. I'm dying to watch and look, but I can't I hope they make it out alright and I hope they do it quickly - the suspense is killing me!! Lewis
Good luck with the others Incy is good to watch them hatch, but there's nothing like seeing a broody running around the garden with her chicks under her scrambling round for a worm
jellykelly
well, I definately have one out. I looked in on mum this morning and there was a little head!! I will be getting rid of my little one to playschool and then will have a proper look under mum to see the status of other eggs/chicks and give the chicks the once over. It's exciting isn't it!! jellykelly
One hatched teeny tiny oh so cute chick, one pipping, four doing nothing.
meezers
Exciting, fingers crossed the other 4 hatch - could just be late starters
jellykelly
I hope so - I gather that mum will decide when the eggs are done and get off if they're not likely to hatch? She's very 'growly' at the moment so I'm assuming that things are happening or she's just being very protective of the one that has hatched. Also, another question...... The broody and chicks are in a house/run like this... http://www.feelgooduk.net/10-egg-ark-4-all-in-one-chicken-coop-run-set.html I have replaced the ramp with a longer one to reduce the angle - will they be able to manage the ramp or shall I buy a cat box and place it underneath at ground level when all hatching is finished? Lewis
Congrats I'd keep them in for the first day, and then put them in the run tomorrow - they sould manage the ramp ok after a couple of days
jellykelly
Thanks Lewis. I now have two hatched chicks but 4 eggs that are still sdoing nothing. I'm not that bothered though. two is great - far better then just one lone one.
meezers
Re the ramp. Mine went down the ramp no problem, but for the first week I had to lift them into the house at bedtime. Though they could walk up the ramp ok, and did so plenty of times throughout the day, at bedtime Muppet would jump up into the house ( avoiding the ramp) and the chicks( cute, but not very bright ) would look up at Muppet then run round chirping ' how did she get up there?' Cue Muppet jumping down into the run, rounding them up and then jumping back up into the coop leaving them looking bewildered again.

miller30
Hi i had a really low ramp on my house and my chicks couldnt manage it and the broody wouldnt let me help them either she went mental so i had to make a set of low steps out of paving slabs and concrete and they hop up. jellykelly
Oh no. Well I'm prepared to watch the first attempt, if they don't manage I'll be popping up to PAh to buy a cat carrier which will provide a nice home underneath the higher level. Other news....... As of this morning, I have two bouncy chicks and another pipper!
jellykelly
Here's a quick pi cof one of the chicks. It's the only one I could get as mum wasn't playing!
meezers
And in true Sha-style, you didn't have your camera to hand Sha x I was too busy laughing , you try catching chicks, and posting them through the pop hole while trying to prevent the already posted chicks and Muppet from exiting the pop hole.I would get 2 or 3 in,and while I was chasing the 4th, the 2nd and 3rd would be back out to see what was going on it would make a good gameshow.
