jens cakery
Hello everyone, this is my first post...I have very stupid questions but hope you don't mind answering them for me! My girls arrived on Thursday in their eglu go and I am totally besotted. We had two soft-shelled eggs on saturday, and since then I've been pacing up and down hoping for 'proper' eggs, like an expectant father! My silly questions are: - the food container is pretty big for two girls, as far as I can see it'll take days for them to get to the bottom! But I don't think they could get their heads all the way to eat the grain at the bottom. Do you keep emptying the old food out and topping up, or put new food on top of old, or just let them eat it all up before putting more in? I read the post re rotten grain so nervous. - poo-picking/racking the wood chip (though note, haven't got round to getting woodchip YET) - how to you poo-pick in the run? I can't reach in. Am I being over-keen? Should I blast it with the hosepipe? Or do you move the whole thing to poo-pick? Thanks in advance. Looking forward to letting the girls out to explore/wreck the garden tomorrow. Barbara Margot
migsy
Hello! I have a Go. I wondered the same thing about the depth of the feeder but they can reach to the bottom so I leave them to get to the bottom before refilling. They take ages to eat it so I don't fill it right up. I have woodchip at the bottom of the run and I just rake it over every couple of days and throw some Stalosan F into it about 1x a week. Also, I hose the chips down about once a week too so that the poo can get washed into the ground underneath. The Stalosan gets sprinkled on it when it is dry. I never move the run. Everyone has different ways of doing things, but I hope this helps.
littlehenny
I agree with Migsy, though I have a classic eglu not a go. I just rake over every couple of days. My 4 freerange all day so I don't have too much of a problem with poo in the run, but I would just add that you need to make sure you buy wood chippings and not bark chippings. Bark goes really slimey when its wet. I get bags of wood chippings delivered by my very nice local tree surgeon, he charges about £5 a bag and they last for ages before 'disappearing' into the ground Enjoy your chooks, they are totally addictive!!
