Cant find Buffs?! so got these instead! pictures

Recommended Posts

i have been looking for breeders of Orpingtons near me (Swindon), i would prefer Buff, but really dont mind other colours, but cannot find a local breeder or seller, can anyone help?

there are some Brahmas near me, but dont have much knowledge of these hens. the new hens would have to be introduced to my 2 exisiting hybrids, which I have made plans for so this could be done gradually. but ideally I would like them to be POL so they dont get picked on for being small!

I also love the Faverolles, but cant find a local breeder of these either!

Have you looked at Practical Poultry ?

If you don't have it I will have a look for you.

Brahmas are like Orpingtons gentle giants.

Favroelles are really really hard to find.

Have you had a look at the domestic fowl trust ? they list most breeds, but don't know how long a drive it would be for you.

not the best place to go...

Try the Buff Orp club http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGK/Orps/BRKOrps.html they will be able to provide details of breeders in your area or take your details to pass on

Toddy Hamilton-Gould in Bicester (about 50 mins up the A420 and A34) breeds good quality Faverolles, she is the secretary of the Scots Dumpy Club (she breeds those too) and her details are:

Mrs Toddy Hamilton-Gould, Secretary

Tower Fields,

Tusmore Nr Souldern Bicester

Oxfordshire OX27 9HY UK

PH 01869 346554:

Or try the Faverolle Club: faverolles@btopenworld.com

They do have Orpingtons at the new chicken department at Millets Farm Centre (not on your doorstep - outside oxford so not too far) at the mo they have black but have had buff in the last 2 months. They turn over fairly rapidly so may be worth a call to find out if they have any coming in, hens are POL, it's clean, well cared for and they all look very healthy. The chickens are in the garden centre bit, they have a website with contact details.

I was disgusted at how the chickens were kept at Frosts in Willington.

Slap bang in the middle of a busy walk way...all the hens looks sad and sorry for themselves (no scratting or showing any interest in anything, some even seemed to be asleep - or at least trying to - in the middle of the day) and they had huge feeders and drinkers that took up all the space in the run. All this made worse by the fact that they advertise them in all-in-one coop & runs set up saying "houses up to 12 birds"...the house might but the run looks cramped for the three they had!!

They also had three tanks containing dead or dying fish...that were still there 3 days later. :x

I complained but I don't think anyone was paying attention. :wall:

Clearly the garden centres are run by different staff an managers - Frilford Heath is fine. By nature of it being a garden center there are people walking through, but the girls are happy, scratching about and above all else healthy. The aquariums inside and out are clean and full of healthy fish. They do a far better job than some of the farmers/breeders out there!

Well,

Thank you for all your help!, I went to Millets Garden centre yesterday pm and they had all hybrid birds and a trio of black orps which are reserved. So contacted a local ad about the Brahmas, went to see them  ......just for a look you know :liar: took along a big box  and somehow came home with 4 lovelies!......:clap:

They are all different colours some a couple of weeks older .the lady was lovely and has tried to sex them, but we are on return / swap basis if they do turn out to be boys.

I let our two out to F-range and shut the babies in the pen all afternoon. Then at dusk lifted the babies into the cube and shut them in , got our 2 into the pen and then opened the cube so they could get to bed. We checked in the cube and they had all roosted together no squabbles!. This am I got up at 5am and let them all out in the pen. Tinker has been chasing them out of the way, but nothing too aggressive (yet), and they are getting out of her way! Because they are brahmas they are as big as the existing 2 almost and will get bigger. Whislt I am out I am taking the oldies to F-range and then going to only put them together when I can see whats going on.

Still to name them...........Although I think the white one is to be called Bitsy

I do have my suspicions about this one being able to carry off a girly name!

Brahmas are fab, really gentle birds. Yours are lovely.

I hadn't realised Millets Farm had chickens now. I'm driving that way later and was having an internal battle over if I should go strawberry picking so now my mind's made up and I''m going for a nosey
