where to holiday abroad?

Recommended Posts

hi guys,

i've been looking for a last minute holiday abroad for the last couple of days :wall: and i really need some suggestions of nice places to go! we're looking to go the end of june/beginning of july.

because i've got a chronic illness and have been recovering from numerous operations me & hubby haven't managed a honeymoon since we wed in 2008 :boohoo: so really we'd like to go somewhere special  ...but it can't break the bank as we've recently bought our first house so need to look after our pennies!

somewhere with watersports and activities for disabled people is a must, i.e. jet skis, para-gliding, quad biking, boat trips.. or anything else fun! :P

and we're both really into nature & wildlife

but most importantly it must be a country where hospitals/doctors are accessible to tourists.

we've been to egypt before and hubby's pretty keen to go back there - we know there are suitable activities for me to do and most of the hotels have a doctor on site... but i think i'd like to experience something new...

any ideas will be greatly appreciated! 8)

I can vouch for Cephallonia,in Greece.

It is a truly breathtaking island, peaceful but still with plenty to do.

It is where 'Captain Corellis Mandolin' was set & shot,so there is plenty of interest from that too.

And as Hubby was hospitalized when we were there I can also vouch for their healthcare, which is superb.

If you stay near (ish - its a small island) to the capital,it has a really nice nightime vibe to it & it great for daytime shopping trips too.

Not sure about the disabled watersports aspect. You may need to travel to somewhere more commercial for that (Minorca is lovely - nicer than Majorca & very pretty indeed)

You might want to check with your travel insurance where you can actually travel if you want to be fully covered. Currently, for me, Spain, Cyprus, Greece and Turkey are all on the No list if I want to be fully covered. The No list has also grown considerably in recent years as all of the above used to be covered.

All I can add is don't go to Bulgaria - their second language is German and Carl ended up in hospital on the last night, certainly not to be recommended :? - it was like something out of M.A.S.H.

I won't go anywhere now if I can't communicate well enough for an emergency hospital visit, even the phrase book was no help.

This was a few years ago but I don't think it has changed much.

Go to the Lakeland region in Finland!

Ryanair fly to Tampere on the edge of Lakeland, lots of sports and leisure activities, lakes and boat trips and beautiful scenery and walks, everything is clean and well maintained and the people speak English as a second language :D

The Lakeland region is where people go for the weekends and so its well set up for enjoyment!

We go with ryanair, hire a car in tampere (Budget rent a car are brill) and stay in a cabin from this website:

We have been to Finalnd several times, its not as expensive as people think (Sweden and Norway are expensive) we absolutely love it and Lapland in the winter is awesome :D

Turkey! Marmaris is GREAT! We are going back again this year. It is cheap cheap cheap because they don't use the Euro. It is touristy, but nowhere near as much as places like Tenerife or Lanzarote, loads to do and lovely scenery. Clothes, DVDs etc are also cheap as there are no copyright laws so you can stock up. Football shirts (not genuine) were our main purchases!!!

I also loved Zante, but haven't been in 8 years, so it could have changed.

Sharm el Sheikh - Egypt! Naama Bay. Very nice & easy (flat) to stroll along the front.. lovely atmoshere. Beautiful fish in the sea. Quad biking in the desert, watersports etc. Beautiful & affordable!

We are staying at Gazala Beach hotel next year - right on the front, but other nice ones are Jolie Ville, or the Hilton.

We booked online with Red Sea Holidays. This year we went with Thomas Cook - not so good service. Others went with Thomsons & they were fine.

Hospitals are fabulous - as my sister in law fell & had a severe head injury ( still suffering). She says they were fantastic!

thanks for all the great replies everyone!

we've decided to go back to egypt, it's where we got engaged so hubby convinced it will the perfect place to return for our long awaited honeymoon. also we know the health service is great and there's always a doctor on site, the egypitains working in the tourist industry tend to beable to speak most english and they're normally really friendly, and we know their are loads of fun activities i can access with my disability :)

also we've checked and the egyptian embassy have confirmed i can take my prescribed controlled medication (i.e. class A drug) into the country with a gp note.

emma we went to sharm last time and stayed at Savita resort! Naama Bay is awesome! the resort was brilliant too (on shark's bay - was yours too?) and had it's own private beach and a coral reef for snorkelling (the only thing was the coral reef/sea is accessed via a jetty from the beach, and because my condition has detereorated since then i wouldn't be strong enough to snorkel in the deep sea)... so we've booked to go to Taba Heights, an isolated resort with 5 'village-like' hotels on the beach and a mountain back drop. there are loads of shops & stools on the resort and a hippy market once a week! and the beach slopes into the sea so you can walk out to the coral reef and still only be at a depth of 4 feet.. so there's no chance of me drowing! there's also a dive & watersport centre on the beach so we'll be able to do our jet skiing and some para-gliding, and prob go out on a pedalo too 8) i can't wait! also hoping to go quad biking into the mountains (which we did last time in the desert) - but we'll have to see if they'll let me go on the back on hubby's quad  because i don't think i'll be strong enough to manage my own. there's also an excursion to the red sea!

i'm really hoping i get to see some turtles as they commonly come up to the reef but i'm sure whatever we see will be exciting! :P

lydia this might help you (and any other people with additonal health requirements who worry about going abroad):

we booked with thomson and they let you have an extra 5kg of luggage for medical supplies/equipment at no extra cost. and have also arranged for me to have a wheelchair waiting at the airport and offered me any seats we wanted on the plane (also for free). brilliant service so fingers crossed they'll come through with what they've promised.

also got great travel insurance with virgin - for both me & hubby the total cost was only £18 (+ the oppitional £6 which we paid to cover us for dangerous sports, i.e. para-gliding) - thought that was excellent since i have an array of health needs and have quite a severe illness, and have recently had a number of major surgeries inc one emergency sugery.

and as i've already said the egypitan embassy allow tourists to bring prescribed drugs into the country, and based on previous experience it's a really good place for people with medical conditions & mobility needs to go and still be able have fun as well as some relaxation  ...also chilling on a cushion smoking a shisha pipe is heavenly :shh: .. especially for those of us who have a hard life.

it'll be great to just feel 'normal' for a week  we fly out on tuesday!
