Is it more than just a cold?

Recommended Posts

Morning everyone,

I am a newbie and would be very grateful for some advice on one of my 3 girls. They are approx 22 weeks, have been with me for a week and all seems to be going well (2 !egg! a day!) but I'm just a bit unsure about Ga Ga.

I assumed she had a cold because she has been sneezing since she arrived. She has some white by her nostrils (which I assume is dried mucus). Over the last couple of days her vent feathers have become dirty and her droppings are quite often runny. She has been losing feathers but the other two aren't picking on her. She has been eating and drinking well and has plenty of shade. She hasn't laid yet but she's clearly not as settled as the other two. She's very nervous in comparison so I haven't been able to pick her up to inspect her more closely.

Should I worm them or are they a bit young?

Any ideas what's wrong with her?

Thanks in anticipation x

hmm I would contact your breeder. Yes it might be "just a cold" but it could quickly develop into something nasty so you're right to keep a close eye on her.

I lost a one of my first girls to mycoplasma. It's dormant in many flocks and can be brought on by stress eg the move. It's also highly contagious so consider separating her if she gets worse  A chook hides illness very well and can go downhill alarmingly rapidly (as in hours).

I'd say monitor her and (esp if she gets worse) either take her back (but be forewarned that they'd probably cull her) or to the vet - if you catch it early enough, a course of anti biotics will help. Meanwhile, make sure she's eating and drinking (put in extra feeders/drinkers) and worm them all with Flubenvet. Good luck and hope she gets well soon. And well done for being so vigilant :)

I bought a small pekin a while back (Around 5 months ago)

And she had a "cold" and we could not get rid of it ... It just wouldn't go - We tried everything !

And sadly she died a couple of days ago

So i would contact the breeder as soon as possible just in case ...

This was my story : viewtopic.php?f=11&t=65571

Have a read and it might help you a bit ...

Good Luck :D

If you decide to keep her I'd urge you to take her to the vet. As Tutti Frutti says the stress of a move can bring on myco, particularly in younger birds. It is a horrid disease which can kill. Even if its a more minor respiratory disease it can usually be cleared up with a dose of antibiotics.
