tokenwelshman
"So, what did you do on Sunday?" "Rat-proofed my Eglu." "Oh..." (sound of receding footsteps) For a few days I've noticed a couple of brown rats merrily running around in the Eglu run while the chickens are free-ranging. The neighbours have noticed too! So today I covered the run in chicken wire with much smaller holes than the standard Eglu run mesh. My fingers are shredded. And this is the result: And here's one of the jailbirds... I've also ordered a Rat Zapper, which seems to get a lot more good press than bad... I live near a stream so I suppose it's inevitable there are going to be rats around. You wouldn't think that I have two cats, and that there are at least four other cats in the immediate area, would you?

tokenwelshman
"So, what did you do THIS Sunday?" "Carried on rat-proofing my Eglu." "Oh..." (sound of somebody nervously telephoning local home for the bewildered) I had already wrapped my Eglu run in much finer mesh (as devotees of this thread will already know). However I was paranoid about rats burrowing in under the run. In fact I was particularly repulsed by a few threads which mentioned that rats will happily nest under an Eglu (because of the warmth of the chickens - ) and will then gnaw up through the base of the nesting box. So, security measures have been stepped up even further today, with concrete slabs being laid beneath the coop and the run. I have to say that I haven't noticed any rats around since the extra wire mesh was added. Not taking any chances though.

Don't know about you but my fingers are shredded from all the messing around with wire netting.
