enpekt
Izzy laid a thin shelled egg again 2 days ago, she didn't lay yesterday but went into the nest box last night, I thought to day an early morning one today. She was in there for 3 hours this morn. came out for a while and has been in there and still is for another two hours. She has her tail raised as if trying to lay. I have tried lubricating her vent and tried to sit her on a hot water bottle but she wouldn't stay on it. Gave her a dose of Zolcal on bread a few hours ago. Not sure what to do next. Cannot feel anything around her abdomen but not sure what i am looking for. She has laid crumbly eggs on and off for while but has never been in the nest box for so long. can anyone advise please. Plum
It sounds more like she is broody. If she was having trouble laying an egg I would expect her to be fluffed up and tail down looking misserable.
enpekt
Hi Plum, she doesn't look miserable but is very puffed up, She is growling/swearing at me and the other chooks if they go near her in the nest box.

enpekt
Have read the topic Plum, very useful thanks, She is warm underneath Pikey, but no warmer than the other girls get when they are in the box to lay. She is not 'spread out' though like my RIR goes when she is broody, more upright with her tail up, in like a triangular shape. I will see what tomorrow brings but seems that I should turf her out. Incidentally, neighbour gave me a quizzical look when i went outside with a hot water bottle in 25 degrees of heat. enpekt
Yes, you were right you clever people This morning we have the 'porcupine' feather look, the 'cluck, cluck' sound, more growling and swearing, and feathers plucked from her underside. A cold bath for her me thinks. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experience, this site is so much better than any book that's printed, indeed a book with all the stickeys and key points would be brill. enpekt
As she's obviously broody, we've obtained nine fertilised eggs to utilise her condition. She now occupies the eglu, fenced off from the other 13, and we're going to ensure she eats and drinks. Some of the others are going to be unhappy as they've been laying there, but there's plenty of nesting areas and they'll have to cope. Hopefully!
