3 eggs from 1 gingernut but now poorly

Recommended Posts

I was awoken early this morning by an awful barking/loud sneezing sound - not a sound I've heard my chickens make before. Rushed down in my dressing gown to find my gingernut in the Eglu having laid a thin shelled egg and harder shelled egg (but the brown colouring had smeared on the second and there was calcium deposit). She hadn't laid in 3 days and I put it down to the recent hot weather. However she still looked and sounded in pain. She was making the most awful sound I've heard - almost like a goose barking. I wondered if she had another egg to come and was finding it difficult to pass so took her indoors, tried to give a warm bath in the sink (not successful) but managed to syringe some olive oil into her vent and sat her on a heating pad. Realised that she was sneezing (my other hens sneeze much more quietly) so adminstered soluable tylan by syringe. Gently massaged her abdominal area then after an hour or so put her back in the run. She immediately ran into the eglu and laid another egg, slightly misshapen probably because it had been jammed. Thought she was going to perk up after that but no she laid down in the run, tail down and wheezed and sneezed continuously. So have been administering Tylan solution by syringe on and off all day today. She caught her respiratory problem off a Bluebelle I got on Saturday. I would have loved to have separated my newbies completely for a week but I don't have the option - I can only separate them in the run via weld mesh internal doors so they can still touch beaks. Is there anything I need to do or be aware of.

I have managed to get my chickens through this latest bout of respiratory illness with the help of Tylan and all seem fit and well now. My gingernut has not laid since she had that bout of laying 3 eggs in one day (which in a way is good because she can concentrate on being fit and healthy). I am just keeping my fingers crossed that she hasn't stopped laying for good. Really hoping for some uneventful chicken keeping for a while. So far it has been very emotionally draining.
