I went out a 7 to check on the chickens. All three chicks were up and about. P diddy (the one that was initally thrown out of the nest and the smallest) was looking a bit hunched but moving. By 8 she was on her side in the run with laboured breathing. I couldn't watch her suffer

 

There wer no signs of cocci - poo all fine and other chicks are well. I will buy some coxoid today just in case though.

I lost 2 last weekend to cocci with no warning signs other than been listless

coxid worked wonders had a third that look 'tied' and thin. it running and jumping now as if nothing happened

Sorry to hear that. Sometimes they just have more problems than are immediately obvious; I had to cull one of my chicks at the weekend for similar reasons.

I lost a 4 day old chick yesterday.. was always a bit behing the others looked tired.. and wasn't as energetic.. do you think I should treat the others with some of that coxiod stuff ? as I have some I bought in case...

Thanks guys. I know it was the right thing to do, but it still doesn't feel great.

The kids have taken this so well though - they understood the situation completely - so if nothing else, it has taught them a lesson in how to take full responsability with all aspects of animal care.
