On the topic of finding hens, well I am having the same problems. I'm still not sure what hens to get and as we don't have our WIR built yet I'm in no hurry, but all the same it's nice to check out all the breeders and see which ones they have. I keep seeing some lovely ones down in Devon too, in fact one is in Crediton and I have some friends who live there and they often come up to Herts to see family and friends, but I'm not sure a 4hr car journey would be good for them. Also I'm not someone who likes to ask favours, so I guess I will just have to keep looking.

 

I also get some days when I start to wonder what on earth I have started. A few months ago I had never even thought of having chickens and I've had some odd comments from friends and family about getting them

 

My OH got really sunburnt on the weekend trying to put in the oak sleepers for the WIR and much as he loves our hens too I'm sure there are days when he must wonder how much all of this is going to cost

I know what you mean about the cost! It is neverending I think it should be made very clear somewhere on here *WARNING - Don't for a moment think you will stick to 2 - 4 chickens*

 

I have already modified the WIR in my head for when we get the cube - but I haven't told hubby yet! In my mind it will need a few more panels I'm not in any rush - if I play my cards right I can pretty much get away with murder I need to prove to him first that I am serious about this chicken business...

Blimey, with all this rain, I am so pleased that the OH put the roof on today. I sort of unexpectedly got 9 chickens and a cube last Sunday, and they got a bit muddy this week. Now all that is left is the last wiring bit at the top, and to move the cube outside. At least the chickens can move under the cube, so it is not as cramped as it looks. Good think too, as it is where they were hiding from the rain most of the time! Hubby is not happy with the roof, but I chose to have the roof slope to the left, and he didn't think it was a good idea looks-wise. Nevermind I love it!

Well, we will have to chop off the wooden house at the top which is now redundant, and the cube will go up there on the outside. Don't worry, I will put the wooden house somewhere where I can use it for broody&chicks (if I'm ever brave enough to hatch my own), or hospital, or newbies. Husband not impressed!!

 

How did I 'sort of unexpectedly' get 9 chickens and a cube? Got home from holiday last Saturday afternoon, OH went fishing, and I was surfing Omlet in the evening, when someone advertised their cube, chickens and bits. I blame OH, because he NEVER answers his phone when he goes fishing, but that night he did. And he said, 'just do it'. And then I found myself going on Sunday to collect it all. It happened all a bit quickly, but here I am! Week on, no eggs yet, but chickens seems settled and seems to be perking up a bit. I hope I will have an egg this week

I love the 'unexpected' nature of your new kit!!!! run looks fab as well, and I am jealous - although OH has made the panels for at least 2 sides of ours at his workshop this w/e, so we are getting there....
