Heidi-Hi

My very own WIR! **UPDATED**

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just thought I would share my excitement of my WIR. My OH started this weekend gone, and this is as far as it got! We are extending the tiny existing run to give them a bit more space for when I'm not home to let them free-range.

Oh, I should have explained before. We put it up like that just to make sure it all fitted together and to get the measurements right for the two panels that's got the 'step' in to get to the top level. We've taken it apart again, and it is currently being stained a lovely green! Next weekend the OH is digging foundations (apparently he is still waiting for me to tell him how deep to go  ) That and some buried mesh should hopefully do the trick :anxious: Then weekend after on goes the roof, and then it is CHICKEN TIME! :D

Hi, fabulous runs both of you. Heidi your run is huge and the carpentry is very skillful. Looks massive. :D

Is that an Ikea table, Migsy? That is just what I need. Just looking on Ikea website.... ooh found table legs already. If only my car worked!

Yes, I got it yesterday along with a few other items including DAVE the laptop table, and a krocken rail to hold the grub. I haven't put it up yet, but will try to finish the walk in run next week. I'm not looking forward to trying to make a stable door and egg ports etc. Your run looks great with the lovely pink eglu on the posh table. hehe.

Well, it's been another week, and my panels are now green, with the galvanised mesh attached. Tomorrow is foundations/slabs/don't know yet really, and hopefully putting it up minus the roof. That is next weekend. I feel a bit down though. It is such hard work, and my OH is doing such a good job, and it is just for me. He is not really into all this chicken business, but has blisters and cuts and splinters and no weekend. We are all stressed out!! :? Trying to keep a 2 year old away 'cause Daddy is working with staple guns and sharp wire, and she is screaming blah blah blah - I wish I never started this :(:(

Also, I've been looking in so many places, but I can't seem to find the chickens I want, apart from that 'Perfect Poultry', and that would be my last resort if I really have to. Is it true that chickens are getting harder to get hold of from about now till next spring? I don't really want to incubate my own eggs - no experience, no equipment, no space, and what do I do with the cockerels? I would love some Wyandottes, and I have seen a Blue Laced Barnevelder, and I fell in love!! It just seems that all the places with the breeds I want is in Devon or Scotland or basically a million miles away :( Fed up and want my choocks now :?

Very good.

I sent you a list of Poultrys about a week ago? Did you find any good places?

Hi Mollie, I'm getting my hybrids from Widgits (as they owe me four FOC), but I'm struggling with the three pure breeds. Perfect Poultry had some very bad reviews lately (although I know someone who has had birds from there this year and she is happy with them), and Surrey Poultry don't really do what I want (but they are still on my shorlist). I want an Aurucana, Blue Laced Barnevelder and possibly a Silver Pencilled Wyandotte (jury is still out on that one!). If I go to Surrey Poultry I could go for a Cotswold Legbar and a Leghorn. Mmm, decisions decisions...
