Ex-batts in France, Belgium or Germany

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm new here. We hope to buy a Cube and run very soon and will then be looking for our chickens. :)

We live in Luxembourg. Does anyone know if you can get ex-batts over on this side of the channel? We've tried researching it but can't find anything.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, we live in rural south west france and I looked into getting some ex-bats. The nearest I could get to it was, a friend of a friend that owns a chicken farm was willing to let us buy some hens from him. All the chickens on farms near us free range all of the time so we wouldn't be helping the hens, we would just be relieving the farmer of some elderly hens that were proberbly near the end of their laying career. We never intended running an old-age chicken retirement home so.......The BHWT is not allowed to send hens over to France and at the moment there is no scheme in place over here - basically no-one was interested :( We bought some hens from our local market. :D

I would be ever so interested if you can find out anything more on the subject.

I guess it is the same here. I think batteries have been banned across the borders in Belgium and Germany but I think there are still batteries in France. I'll keep looking and will report back if I find out anything.

By the way, where do you get all your feed, grit etc? Can you recommend some good brands? Although I'm in Luxembourg, I can drive across the border very easily (Lux is so bite-sized) and get to French shops.

To be honest, we buy all of our feed and grit from our local B&Q type DIY shop called LeClerc Brico. It's very reasonably priced and the girls are not fussy. I get 10kg of layers pellets for around 6 euros, crushed corn and wheat is around 2 euros for 5kg bags and oyster shell/grit is around 3 euros for a 5kg bag. The supermarket shop of LeClerc also sells the food as well. Our girls have all of the kitchen peelings and I get them a couple of cheap tins of sweetcorn each week and they are really happy. :D

We have only come across one battery farm near to where we are and that was only a very small place, all of the chicken farms close to us are lovely free range places with huge fields for their girls to roam in. The hen-house doors are open all day for shade from the sun and they all look healthy and happy. The regions eggs are sold in all the local shops.
